The upcoming exhibition "California Dreaming” travels from Florence to UC Davis in 2027. With faculty travel now supported by the College of Letters and Science, your gift helps faculty scholars Louis Warren and Natalia Duong bring the Florence exchange back to UC Davis. The conversations and perspectives they gather there will become teaching, gallery and program resources for students when "California Dreaming" comes to campus next fall.

Book a table for your group during Fridays in the Studio and join other student groups for an afternoon of art making with an optional self-guided gallery visit.

This quarter’s first session is on October 2, and we’re kicking things off with kinusaiga — a no-sew quilting technique — and flowy blacklight watercolors.

Save the date: “Imagining America: Artists and Scholars in Public Life” (IA) invites participants to gather in Davis, from October 23-25. Opening with a plenary address by Black Feminist Love Evangelist, Alexis Pauline Gumbs, “Tides of Transition: Restoring Collective Spirit in Troubled Times” calls us to re-story and honor the places, knowledges, relationships, and ecologies in the spirit of mending the roots of our connections. Registration to the 2026 Imagining America National Gathering is now open. (Please note: There is a fee to register and attend this event.)

Imagining America: Artists and Scholars in Public Life, Oct. 23-25, is organized in partnership with UC Davis and a diverse regional Steering Committee. Welcome, Aggies! Take a wellness break at UC Davis’ free contemporary art museum. Experience three brand-new exhibitions of Northern California artists, check out our classrooms, and learn about fall quarter’s student programs.

We are participating in UC Davis New Student Programs Orientation programming this week and hosting large student groups on Saturday afternoon, which means we won’t have our regular Art Spark program that day. You’re still welcome to stop by, help us welcome incoming students, and send a postcard to future you — a fun Orientation tradition for new beginnings.

“Out of Line: Art at the Edge” is now open! Take a trip back in time to 1960s and ‘70s Davis, and immerse yourself in film, print and performance from artists Mike Henderson, Ester Hernandez, Malaquías Montoya, Bruce Nauman, Nancy Rubins, Dorothy Wiley and the student artists of UC Davis’ Third World Forum.

Inspired by conceptual artist Bruce Nauman’s video work “Dance or Exercise on the Perimeter of a Square (Square Dance),” 1967–68, this exhibition explores Davis as a site of both artistic practice and political protest. Step onto the square and walk its perimeter. Move slowly
or quickly. Follow Nauman’s body movements or make your steps entirely your own.

“In the 1960s, ’70s and ’80s, as political and cultural upheavals reverberated across the country, artists navigated their own perimeters,” said Ginny Duncan, assistant co-curator. “Davis was neither epicenter nor periphery, but a charged edge: a place where boundaries were tested and redrawn, and local struggles echoed and fueled international movements.”

“Out of Line: Art at the Edge” is on view through Dec. 5.
