HAPPY BIRTHDAY STEVE! Today we threw a party for the oldest banded songbird on Putah Creek, STEVE the Western Bluebird! He’s 8 years old, which is really old for WEBL. Say happy bird day to Steve! 🥳

Steve was banded as a hatchling in 2018. He’s a big fan of the Putah Creek Nestbox Highway and has fathered AT LEAST 30 chicks of his own. What an MVP. We had a great time celebrating with Steve (watching Steve through binoculars) today. To 120, Steve. 🥂🪱🪺

Shoutout to Amanda and Maggie for organizing and to everyone who joined us!

Do you love Chonkers? We love ! Here’s another look at the size difference between a Steller sea lion like Chonkers (right) and a California sea lion (left), this time with their craniums. Steller sea lions, the largest species of sea lion, can be over three times the size of California sea lions.

That Steller sea lion skull is from Crescent City in the 1950s, and the California sea lion skull is from Ocean Beach in San Francisco, 1989.

Today in the Museum’s teaching lab: Dr. Carson Jeffres with students from GEL-136 Ecogeomorphology of Rivers & Streams learning about fishes of the Klamath River in preparation for a two-week trip the class will take to the field. A fishtastic time! 🐟

Say hello and good luck to the first Ash-throated Flycatcher caught and banded on Putah Creek this field season! 🥳🐤 Last year we caught the first ATFL on the creek in over a decade. The Putah Creek Nestbox Highway biologist team has been employing new methods to band these guys for monitoring, and it’s working great!
