June 5th & 6th - Join the Virginia Quilt Museum for a chance to see 20 historic quilts from the museum's collection. These quilt turnings are limited to 15 people each so that guests can get an up close look at each of the quilts featured. The same quilts will be shown on Friday and Saturday - please only register for one.

This turning will focus on quilts made here in the Shenandoah Valley. These quilts range in age from the early 1800s through the 1940s, with most being from the 19th century.

We encourage you to make a day or weekend out of your visit and also attend our program with Mary Robare on The Apple Pie Ridge Star on Saturday, June 6 at 11:00 am.

JOIN US - Saturday, June 6, 2026 from 11:00 am - 12:00 pm for The Apple Pie Ridge Star: History of a Pattern with Mary Robare

This presentation is about the history of an appliqué pattern and one of its most charming names, “The Apple Pie Ridge Star.” Blocks with this pattern appear on a cluster of mid-nineteenth-century quilts made by Quakers which became the inspiration for the “Quilts and Quaker Heritage” exhibit at the VQM in 2008. We will consider how the pattern evolved from the time of its first known appearance on an American quilt, in 1844, and explore the lives and times of people who included it in their quilts.

Mary Robare is an independent researcher, lecturer, author, and curator of historical textiles. She guest-curated the exhibit, Quilts and Quaker Heritage, at the Virginia Quilt Museum in 2008 and has guest-curated two exhibits of historical quilts for the Winchester-Frederick County Historical Society. Her published research includes articles for the American Quilt Study Group Journal, Uncoverings, and their newsletter, Blanket Statements.
