Happy today! Women's Equality Day is a day proclaimed each year by the United States President to commemorate the granting of the vote to women throughout the country. Women in the United States were granted the right to vote on August 26, 1920, when the 19th Amendment to the United States Constitution was certified as law. It was ratified on August 18th, 1920 and passed by only one vote in the last state of Tennessee. Harry S Burn had the determining vote. It was believed he was to vote no until he received this note from his mother Phoebe Ensminger Burn “Hurrah, and vote for suffrage! Don’t keep them in doubt. I notice some of the speeches against. They were bitter. I have been watching to see how you stood, but have not noticed anything yet.” Ending she implored her son to support the suffragist leader Carrie Chapman Catt, "be a good boy and help Mrs. Catt put the ‘rat’ in ratification.” He listened to his mom and voted for the 19th Amendment. It came down to one vote. http://www.history.com/news/the-mother-who-saved-suffrage-passing-the-19th-amendment
