It’s the Year of the Horse!

Today we are highlighting Cavales (Horses) by Alexis Hinsberger and Daum.

Hinsberger utilized the Pâtte de Verre technique to create this abstract depiction of horses. Pâtte de Verre is a kiln casted technique that directly translates to paste of glass. It involves mixing finely crushed glass or frit with a binder to create a paste, this paste is then put into a mold. The mold is placed into the kiln to melt and anneal everything together. When removed from the kiln and the mold, the surface of the glass artwork can be finished or polished.

Today we are highlighting glass artworks in our permanent collection. Orsay Vase, Clear and Orsay Vase, Black by Thomas Bastide and Baccarat.

Thomas Bastide is a designer who joined Baccarat in 1982; many of his works encompass the range of the Baccarat crystal, exemplifying the material's abilities and relationship with light. Both Orsay Vase, Clear and Orsay Vase, Black demonstrate this multifaceted relationship with light.

The Baccarat crystal is known for its clear flawless brilliance, and does not have the imperfections that are often found in natural crystal formations. In Orsay Vase, Clear, Bastide showcases this clarity and transparency, allowing light to pass through and create a distinct glow. On the other hand, Orsay Vase, Black utilizes a color that blocks out the light, creating a void and an absence of light, reflection, and refraction.

Today we are highlighting an ukiyo-e print part of our permanent collection, No.42 Winter Wren and Winter Peony, from the Series: Forty-Eight Hawks Drawn from Life by Nakayama Sugakudo

As we endure through these winter days, may this artwork remind us of the nature and wildlife that perseveres along with us. The Winter Wren is a symbol of resilience; despite its incredibly small size it survives long winters, mountainous environments, and in Japanese culture is widely considered the bird of winter. Winter Peonies bloom in cold harsh climates; in Japan, they are protected by man-made straw roofs to prevent freezing. Overall, Sugakudo emphasizes the beauty and endurance within nature and wildlife.

It’s Watercolor Wednesday and today we are highlighting an artwork part of our permanent collection, Perfil de Jack el Destripador (Profile of Jack the Ripper), 1968, by José Luis Cuevas.

As you look at this abstract painting, you might be wondering why Cuevas chose to paint Jack the Ripper of all people? Cuevas utilized Jack the Ripper along with his grotesque and distorted style of painting to represent the brutal aspects of humanity. He used dark themes and colors to emphasize the violence and overall lack of morality in humans. At the top right corner is a quote from the book Days of My Years by Melville Macnaghten who was a police official famous for his posthumous theories on Jack the Ripper.

Welcome Back and Happy New Year!

The gallery will be closed as we prepare for our upcoming exhibition, Infinite Variety: Selections from the UM-Dearborn Glass Collection. However, do not worry as there are still artworks all over campus for you to see.

Orchid Cluster (2000), by Paul J. Stankard can be found on the first floor of the Mardigian Library. Stankard is known for his blown glass paperweights that have flameworked natural and botanical elements within the center. This specific piece portrays orchids, and is incredibly detailed with the shape and colors, even mimicking how nature also has bugs and insects.

If you are interested in seeing other types of glass art, you can find more of our collection on the third floor of the Mardigian Library. You may also visit the Stamelos Gallery Center’s Online Catalog to find works not on display: https://stamelos.pastperfectonline.com/
