๐Ÿ๐Ÿ–๐Ÿ–๐ŸŽ It began with one woman, usually Mrs. HELEN FREEMAN, reading aloud from a book she brought while her friends sewed and mended useful items for the poor. Then other group members began bringing books to loan to each other. In 1879, as the number of books grew, the first Orange City library was created in a room at the DeYarman Hotel. The Orange City Library Association became official June 5, 1880, with the adoption of a constitution and bylaws. The first president was A.L. WELLMAN, a Volusia County representative to the State Constitutional Convention.

The book collection moved several timesโ€”from Mr. Wellmanโ€™s store to Dr. P.W. Hillโ€™s office to Dr. H.S. Allenโ€™s storeโ€”before the Association, in 1887, purchased a small building on Holly and Lemon (now Cherokee) from Dr. L.P. Hammond. In 1892, Miss Mary Stillman gave the Association a lot on the west side of Holly Avenue near University; books and buildings were moved; and the first library had a permanent home.

Remembering our Pioneers Who Served๐Ÿ‡บ๐Ÿ‡ธ

This week, we will see small flags and floral wreaths adorning cemeteries to honor our departed military service men and women. The earliest recorded observation of Memorial Day took place on May 1, 1865, in Charleston, SC, when a group of formerly enslaved people honored a group of Union soldiers killed in the Civil War. In 1868, Major General John A. Logan established Decoration Day on May 30th as a time of national remembrance. The day has evolved to honor all deceased military who served our country, and even to honor all loved ones who have died.

Among our first pioneers were many veterans of the War Between the States. They include Captain John Rich of the NY 144th Infantry, Lt. Henry B. Austin of the 15th Indiana Engineers, George W. Lancaster of the 2nd Minnesota Infantry, Jesse Scott Craig of the 16th Illinois Infantry, James Frederick Allen of the 36th Wisconsin Infantry, Gardner Dyer Gould of the 3rd NY Light Artillery, and Major Basil B. Bennett of the 101st Indiana Infantry. Private James Jackson Vinzant served in the Florida 2nd Infantry for the Confederacy as did Lt. James B. Jordan in the 26th North Carolina Infantry. All except Jesse Craig are buried at Oakdale Cemetery. In all, there are 27 Union veterans and 21 Confederate veterans buried at Oakdale. At Beresford Cemetery are buried Captain James H. Alexander of the North Carolina infantry, Confederacy, and two Union veterans, Captain Vincent Kirk of the 23rd Indiana Infantry and Benjamin Franklin Colcord of the 3rd New Hampshire Infantry.

And their legacies continued. Gardner Gouldโ€™s son, Sgt. Harold Gould was killed in action in France in WWI. Captain Rich lost both of his grandsons, Cmdr. James E Craig at Pearl Harbor and Lt. Cmdr. John Rich Craig in the Pacific in WWII. James F. Allenโ€™s grandson, 2nd Lt. Geroe Cox Allen was shot down over the North Sea in WWII.

The strong spirit of our pioneers was certainly rooted in their dedicated military service.

๐Ÿ๐Ÿ–๐Ÿ—๐Ÿ It began with a few people of color, from small towns like Enterprise, gathering at DeLeon Springs to celebrate freedom from enslavement. Just two days before on May 20, 26 years after Emancipation was proclaimed in Tallahassee, some 2,000 African Americans from Volusia and other Central Florida counties were at the Springs. With the railroads offering special rates, there were four full coaches from DeLand and nine from Sanford. It was the largest gathering ever seen at the recreation spot. A similar event in 1889 drew about 700 for a day of fishing, rowing, swimming and games followed by a parade in DeLand, sponsored by the Odd Fellows, and a ball at the Masonic Hall with Vaughnโ€™s band furnishing music.

Emancipation was official in Florida May 20, 1865, 11 days after the end of the Civil War, and two years after the Proclamation, first issued by President Abraham Lincoln, freed those enslaved in southern states. Thatโ€™s why, in Florida, Emancipation Day is traditionally celebrated on May 20.
