Cutting some walnut crotches (the crotch of a tree is where the main trunk of the tree splits into separate branches). The beauty of working with this part of the tree is that you get an awesome feather like pattern which is great for bowls or platters.

Once the eyes are set and hardened, the entire piece is sealed with deft sanding sealer (so the paint doesn't soak into the wood). Next comes a few thin coats of Gesso, which makes a base for the paint to adhere to. And then the shadowing begins by

Time for the eyes! I use two part apoxie to anchor the glass eyes in place. Then a small rolled piece is formed to make the eye ring. I use a toothpick to shape the eye ring (toothpick chosen because it won’t scratch the glass eye). Next comes sealer.
