During the late 1800s, this scruffy stray terrier named Owney was the nation’s most famous canine. He even had fans all the way across the world! After wandering into an Albany, New York post office during a rainstorm, Owney curled up among the sacks of mail where he was eventually discovered by the mail clerks, one of whom (allegedly named Owen) promptly adopted him.

A loyal and energetic companion, Owney – who developed a lifelong affection for mail bags – took to accompanying carriers on their routes; at first, riding along in mail wagons. As mail delivery methods progressed, Owney began to travel with the bags on Railway Post Office (RPO) train cars across the state . . . and then the country! At a time when train wrecks and robberies were all too common, railway mail clerks considered the dog a good luck charm as no train Owney rode was ever in a wreck or robbery. In 1895, Owney even made an around-the-world trip, accompanying mailbags on trains and steamships to Asia and across Europe, before returning to Albany.

In an article for the Railway Mail Service clerk’s newsletter “The RMS Bugle,” the author noted that it was almost impossible to get Owney to remain still for a photograph unless he had a mailbag to perch upon, as seen in the newspaper clipping here. Owney was commemorated with a U.S. postage stamp in 2011 and has made his forever home here with us at the National Postal Museum. Yes, that’s correct – you can see Owney in the flesh at the museum thanks to a handful of mail clerks who collected money to pay for the taxidermy procedure after his death in 1897.

GRAND REOPENING OF POSTAL MUSEUM

The Museum of Postal History has completed most of the renovations and has implemented Covid 19 protocols. The REOPENING is scheduled for Tuesday morning July 14th at 10:30 AM. Visitors will be required to follow social distancing and must wear a mask. All employees will be wearing masks during the visiting periods. Our new hours will be Tuesday through Saturdays from 10:30 to 1:30PM. These abbreviated hours will allow us to do the necessary cleaning in order to keep everyone safe. Hand sanitizer will be available as well as access to all bathrooms. During the period that the museum was closed, several exhibits have been refurbished and others changed completely. New exhibits include a new Pony Express exhibit, an expansion of the Discontinued Post Offices of Allen, Van Wert and Putnam counties. A new exhibit on Letter Carriers includes one of America's most famous mailmen sipping a beer after work at his favorite bar... yep you guessed it Cliff Claven. There are two new exhibits being worked on a replica of the interior of a Highway Post Office Bus (HYPO) and they are recreating a screen wagon from the late 1800s-1900s. The wagon is on loan from Howard Violet of HG Violet Company of Delphos. Our 1963 Jeep is now on display in the front of the building. Other exhibits have been moved to maintain the chronological order of their development.

At the moment they have had to close the upstairs as work is diligently being performed on the Hall of Stamps. Work will also be done to upgrade our exhibits on WWI & WWII with additions made to the Holocaust exhibit. It may be several months until those are completed as funding of the museum has been severely curtailed since our trips to other areas of the country have been cancelled. They are continuing to research different areas taking into account the safety of the passengers and what areas of the country are opening properly.

John Lennon's "Imagine" performed by Pentatonix is a work of art. They beautifully remind us that we are all human. This video is absolutely wonderful.
