Delphos Canal Commission Three floors (17,000 sq.ft.) of local history featuring the canal and transportation, but also including many other facets of life in earlier times.

The Delphos Canal Commission is a non-profit organization whose purpose is the acquisition and preservation of articles relevant to the history of the Miami and Erie Canal and to the history of the City of Delphos, Ohio, and surrounding townships and villages. Towards the end, the Delphos Canal Commission Museum shall maintain standards of operation for both archival and three – dimensional object

s which are useful to the understanding of the heritage of Delphos, Ohio, and its environments. The Canal Commission has an archival collection the from the entire historic period of the region, from an 1863 note to letters home home from the Ohio 116th to hundreds of manuscript pages once used by the Paul Whiteman Band. We have an 1846 log house reconstructed in our museum. There are canal related artifacts from tiny bottles filled with abandoned medicines to the parts of the “Marguerite” that had been pulled from the Miami and Erie Canal in 1989 by 57 Delphos youngsters. Our purpose it to preserve, restore, and recreate the history of Miami and Erie Canal and the history of the city of Delphos. The Delphos Canal Commission is proud of its strong alliance with the commercial district and its growing status as one of the regions most knowledgeable and progressive historic agencies.

We received some incredible donations this week. From the Bob Obermeyer family we got Leslie Peltier’s roll top work desk. They also donated the time clock from the Delphos Bending Works. The time clock is absolutely beautiful.

: On this day in 1829, a Cleveland newspaper advertises: “$14 a Month, will be given for labourers, on Lock no. 44, at Cleveland. Work dry and good fare. John A. Ackley.” The canal was already open between Cleveland and Akron, but maintaining a canal required constant work. Hard work for a mere $14 a month, plus room and board, of course. But what a difference that canal made! This image is post-Civil War, as photography didn’t exist when the canal was built. NPS Photo.

Heritage Ohio is a statewide historical preservation group. One project they're doing for America 250 Ohio is identifying 250 historic buildings in Ohio in three different categories. They'll post all submissions on their page.

Here are three categories.

1. Celebrated 250: Historic buildings that have been restored and have been revitalized and are useful again in the community.

2. Opportunity 250: Historic buildings that are in need of restoration and revitalization so they can become an integral part of the community again.

3. Legacy 250: historic buildings that deserve to have their stories told and documented.

We'll be submitting one building in each category but would like to hear what buildings in Delphos YOU believe should be submitted. Post your response with your selection in all three categories.
