While hauling freight is their day job, several locomotive engineers from G&W railroads have played a special role in America 250 celebrations this year. Ohio Central Railroad (OHCR) locomotive engineers Andy Novak, a 32-year employee, and Ryan Wise, a 14-year employee, operated OHCR’s specially painted “America 250 Years” locomotive on “The Buckeye Train,” a two-day passenger excursion celebrating Ohio’s and America’s transportation history in April.
The event also highlighted another important tradition: passing railroad knowledge from one generation to the next. Novak also operated a 1915 steam locomotive from the Age of Steam Roundhouse Museum that was staged at the Dennison Railroad Depot Museum for the event and shared his expertise with Wise, teaching him the skills needed to keep this piece of railroad history alive. “I’m going to try to learn as much as I can to take over when he retires,” Wise said.
