An addition to our recent Show and Tell was sent to us by Frans and Betty Compeer in Victoria, British Columbia, whose found this deed on eBay. It records a property transaction in Hingham, Massachusetts, dated January 11, 1785, transferring a marsh and woodlot to Seth Stowers from Captain Theophilus Wilder, Jr. , prior to his settling in Township. No. 2, now part of Pembroke, at Passamaquoddy. Read the careful observations on the document in the text below and you will gain new insight into the migration of "the Hingham colony" as they prepared to come to the eastern frontier of the new nation. Betty is a direct descedent of Theophilus Wilder, Jr.

Dear Members and Friends,

The DRHS can offer programs, tours, and a robust website only because of your support and interest. Read on to learn about some of our accomplishments in 2025.

*Programs and Events*

In 2025, the DRHS provided seven programs on a wide range of topics, from the annual show-and-tell event to a presentation about the use of machine learning to transcribe manuscripts such as the Peter E. Vose diary. We also conducted three summer outings that included tours of the Burnham Tavern in Machias and the Holmes Cottage in Calais as well as a walk along the Dennys River to learn about wildflowers.

*Volunteers*

Volunteers created more than 50 Facebook posts focused on our collections and events. They made more than one hundred catalog records of items in the collections, including many postcards and photographs, objects and documents. You can visit our website to see these records describing our cataloged collections. Volunteers also installed shelving in the Academy-Vestry building and moved more than 40 boxes with cataloged items from the Lincoln Library workroom onto the new shelves.

To continue doing this work, we need some assistance. The accomplishments in 2025 were undertaken by volunteers—we have no paid staff. Can you help us? Here are some of the things you might volunteer for:

• Run Zoom meetings that expand our reach
• Help manage the FB page
• Conduct programs on relevant topics
• Add photographs to the online catalog

These are just a few of the ways you can participate. If you would like to learn more about volunteering for the DRHS, send an email to [email protected].

*Members*

Another way to support our work is to join the DRHS. Membership is $25 annually, and payment can be made through the secure donation form on our website. Paid members get access to the members-only portion of the website. Although we are a voluntary organization, we still have expenses, the largest of which is the website. Memberships and donations of any amount support this expense.

We hope you will become more involved with the DRHS, either as a volunteer or a paid member/donor. We look forward to seeing you soon at a regular meeting or special event.

Until then, we wish you the many joys of the season.

Many of the items held in the collections of the Dennys River Historical Society are documents and photographs. But we also have artifacts of all kinds that provide a different window into the past.

The items displayed in this photo , donated by the Sprague family, are barber's tools and include curling irons and straight-edge razor blades. Also shown is a shaving cup showing the name of the Sprague family member who operated the barbershop.

In the 1990s, the Dennys River Historical Society (DRHS) organized Family Day events that brought descendants of early settlers back to the area. The DRHS collection has printed programs for the Family Day events held for the Allan, Hobart, Kilby (the first Family Day program), Lincoln, and Wilder families. See the catalog entry at https://bit.ly/47Ifxwb.

If we did this again, which families would you like to see featured?
