We don’t often get to say this: new Ashley Collins landing in Denver next week.

Her process is slow and deliberate, with more than a year plus spent on many pieces, so mid-year releases almost never happen. For the next two weeks, these works will hang in Cherry Creek.

Installing on Friday, October 16th - 30th.

Every legend starts somewhere. For 007, it started with the Rolex Submariner Ref. 6538, the “Big Crown” on Sean Connery’s wrist in Dr. No (1962), the first Rolex ever worn by Bond.

Ryan Jones paints it in stunning detail in Connery, one of his new original oil paintings debuting next week at Relevant Galleries Cherry Creek. Meet the artist and be the first to see the collection.

THE LAST MARILYN

“This is the last Marilyn painting that I am ever going to create.” - Russell Young

Chosen by the Marilyn Monroe Estate for the official fine art celebration of her 100th birthday this year, and granted full access to the Estate’s archives, Russell Young has revealed an entirely new Marilyn image that is the culmination of his centennial tribute to the definitive American icon.

The Last Marilyn is Young’s final and all-time favorite painting of Monroe, who defined the visual vocabulary of the 20th century. Hand-pulled on linen and heavily layered with oil-based ink, acrylic and Young’s signature shimmering diamond dust, this new work captures a rare, poignant depth from Monroe’s private archives and serves as the grand finale to the artist’s decades-long obsession with Hollywood’s ultimate muse.

Join us this weekend for Santa Fe Indian Art Market at our sister gallery in Santa Fe, Galerie Zuger, for a special retrospective looking at the legacy of Earl Biss.

Date: Friday, August 14th & 15th
Time: 4pm - 8pm
Location: Galerie Zuger
📍120 W San Francisco Street, Santa Fe, NM (off the main plaza)

Earl Biss (1947–1998) began his formal art training at 16 at the Institute of American Indian Arts in Santa Fe, studying under Fritz Scholder, Allan Houser, and Charles Loloma. He became part of what’s been called the “Miracle Generation” of artists there — alongside Kevin Red Star and T.C. Cannon — a group credited with sparking the emergence of contemporary Native American art. Biss kept returning to Santa Fe throughout his career, sharing studio space with fellow artists and helping catalyze what’s now known as Contemporary Southwestern Art, blending Plains Indian subjects with Fauvist and Expressionist color.

Known as “The Spirit Who Walks Among His People” for his devotion to his Apsáalooke heritage, Biss was working on a Santa Fe exhibition when he suffered the stroke that ended his life in 1998 — leaving behind a legacy as, in the words of one critic, “the greatest colorist of the 20th century.”

When I Look at the World | Ashley Collins

84” x 96” Oil and acrylic on aged paper, historic pages, found objects, hand fired polyaspartic finish.

This painting began as a conversation…

We know that we have Angels that appear in our lives at key moments. They come in many forms: a stranger at the airport who says something that alters our worldview, a kind act that is unexpected when we need it most, the helping hand we did not anticipate. A four legged soul that gets us past the hardships of life….

These are our guardian Angels. They come from a realm we cannot fully comprehend, but we know in our hearts is Real.

But what do these Angels get out of this deal?

Therein is the start of the conversation, and the beginning of this monumental painting.

For Collins, the answers are many, and as diverse as the collage of layer upon layer that are embedded in the heart of this canvas.

Perhaps these Angels need us, just as much as we need them. Just as they are in a sphere that we cannot fully comprehend, we are in a tangible sphere that they left long ago. Could it be that by changing our lives, it allows them to feel something that they could not otherwise feel. An emotion that is limited to the tangible form. Perhaps as they are teaching us, we are teaching them.

If this is the case, then the relationship between us and our guardian Angels becomes even more beautiful, for it is a circle of giving. Each giving the other something to make them more complete, more joyous, more content.

Through out this work, this duality is found… from the two very differently expressed horse images, one more literal, one far more abstract and ethereal, to the young girl and her angel counterpart. From the red ribbon of paint that ties them together back and forth, to the words “When I look at the World.”

When we look at the World, it is different for each of us, and the ability to see another’s view is what makes love possible. It is what makes dreams possible. It is what brings out the best in every life we touch.
