ile of a remnant parcel of the Benjamin Moore Paint Factory. That singular redevelopment added a two-story gallery space to the dramatic architecture of the historic Benjamin Moore complex and served as a visual anchor for the entrance to the Upper Larimer corridor and River North Arts District. The Zeile’s sold the building in the fall of 2014, bringing their time in the Ballpark District full-circle as one of the most successful contemporary art ventures in the city. The gallery was named “Art Space of the Year” in 2009 by the Denver Post and most recently ranked Number four on the Denver Posts 2014 list of Top Galleries. The gallery has been profiled for its distinct architecture in 5280, Modern In Denver and Art Ltd. Plus Gallery is a member of the Denver Art Dealers Association and the River North Arts District. Gallery owner Ivar Zeile has served as the creative director for the Denver Theatre District since 2009. He initiated Denver Digerati in 2012 as a platform for advancing animation and motion-based art as new forms of public art via Denver’s unique LED screen inventory, a program that continues to evolve as one of the leading platforms of its kind in the world today. If you happen to be in Salt Lake City this summer, drop by Modern West to see NO BRAKES, featuring auto themed works by Mike Whiting including his super cool series of classic car hoods, some of the most experimental works of the artist's career. Modern West is a gem of a space and the source for contemporary art in SLC.

One of the neater things to happen since the start of the Covid19 crisis started with the tiniest exhibition in the country in Gallery 11 in Michigan, resulting in invaders from space descending on Denver last week. We love the evolution of this super cool artwork commission with Plus Gallery artist Mike Whiting, generated as a result of a very cool collaboration with Conor Fagan

On April 11th, 2020, in the midst of the global pandemic that has shuttered art galleries, museums and just about every opportunity for artistic intersection in “real-time,” Plus Gallery Director Ivar Zeile took the opportunity to record a lengthy telephone/skype interview with artist Xi Zhang. The purpose is to seek insight into his current art practice, philosophy and to explore the large, profound body of work "Metallic Leaf Garden" that he’s been immersed in since 2014.

The recording is being structured as a new "visual podcast" series, with direct views and simulations of Xi's various exhibitions over the last few years. The series offers a new way of looking at the Zhang’s paintings in the online space, stepping beyond traditional static image representations on social media and websites. It’s an elaborate work in progress, which will be released over time and also a new way to reflect on artwork when the opportunity to view in person is limited, whether by a pandemic or simply locations that are outside of our direct community.

The initial segment references Zhang's current exhibition "Dream Dust Milkshake," recently hosted at the Kimball Art Center in Park City, Utah. The visual simulation is constructed through interior views utilizing walls that might be familiar to long-time followers of our program, we could think of no better environment to bring this exhibition to life in a manner befitting the artwork.

"Primitive Man" is practicing social distancing in Michigan with his friends "Gnome" and "Bird." But they'll all be ready to greet visitors to Franconia Sculpture Park whenever they might arrive over the next couple of years. Glad to know Mike Whiting made it back safely from his recent excursion to set his latest installation of artworks.

We are very saddened by the news received over the weekend of John Paul Driscoll's passing due to the Coronavirus. John took on our beloved friend and artist Jenny Morgan back around 2013, putting her forward as one of the lead young artists in his outstanding new contemporary gallery space in Chelsea, where she had two of her finest solo exhibitions in a commercial gallery context. Though John had been dealing art in the epicenter of the art world for many years, as the director of the oldest running gallery in NYC, he treated all with great respect, care and attention that isn't always prevalent in that scene. He had assembled a terrific staff of lovely individuals as well. It's a very unfortunate and heartbreaking loss, one that coincides with the experience so many people are facing in their own way and amongst broad groups of people.
