After years of suffering from pneumonia and tuberculosis, James Joseph "J.J." Brown died 104 years ago today in New York where daughter Helen was caring for him. A lifetime of mining took a toll on his health. As a young man he moved west from Pennsylvania for a chance at finding valuable ore, and he succeeded more than he could have dreamed when his Ibex Company found gold in the Little Johnny Mine. His work helped stabilize and drive the Colorado economy during the silver crash and it shaped the state we know today. In this photo he is seated with his granddaughter, Betty Brown.

Thank you Molly Brown community! You have helped us solve the mystery word in this letter. Although we don't know the exact date of this letter, we know it was December in the late 1920s, the same time she was writing her memoirs. A "Titanic" book makes sense as she likely included a detailed piece about Titanic in her book. Unfortunately her memoirs were never published and have been lost to history.

Last chance to see this and other artifacts in our 150/250 "Let Them See What We Can Do!" exhibit. The glass ballot box, produced in the mid-1800s, was an icon of the democratic process. The see-through box reduced fears about voter fraud. Voters could see their own ballot drop in and make sure others did not drop in multiple ballots. How would you feel if we still used glass ballot boxes? Exhibit up through September 27th.

We need help deciphering Margaret's handwriting. In this letter Margaret is sending her friend and housekeeper, Mrs. Grable, Christmas greetings. She asks to borrow a book from her, and we can't figure out what the book is about. The full sentence reads "I want you later when I write you to send thru mail the book you have on ______ and it will be returned to you when I get data." Please help us fill in the blank!

Have you been to Hammond's? Locally made, you can still visit the original factory here in Denver. Hammonds has been around since 1920 and has a fascinating history! When visiting the Molly Brown House Museum, you can try some of their sweets in the gift shop, including their old-fashioned taffy! So vibrant in color and flavor, why not have a little taste of history?
