Tonight is the opening reception at GOCA for Broken Poems of Fireflies by Etsuko Ichikawa as part of Simulacra: (or, The Persistence of Nature in an Age of Mediation. The new exhbit is curated by Joy Armstrong, Ph.D, and includes work by Dornith Doherty, Etsuko Ichikawa and Bill Viola. The exhibit will be on view June 26-Oct. 10.

“Vestige” showcases the porcelain work of Tina Suszynski. Suszynski’s current body of work is inspired by her observations of roadside fields and abandoned building sites where ghostly husks and wiry entanglements stretch outward like exposed nerves. A past effort to beautify the landscape after slashing through the once serene natural environment is now abandoned and unruly as nature reclaims what was lost.

Using “plant matter”—porcelain casts of buds, twigs, seed heads, and nests—as a personal ceramic vocabulary, Tina
creates sculptures from these chaotic parts, using nature as inspiration—rocks, icebergs, and most often, tangled roots,
whether exposed or hidden underneath a reconfigured pile. The monochromatic white surface, reminiscent of bleached
coral or bone, carries an environmental undertone: a quiet but persistent signal of ecological loss.

The Denver Public Library has acquired this painting as one of four important works by Floyd D.Tunson. We look forward to being able to see it on view. Did you know that works in the Central Library that are not on display, can be seen by request at any time? They will promptly place them in a viewing room for visitors to see. If you ask us, that is pretty darned cool!

Come see these concurrent shows by Elizabeth Ferrill and Brad Reed Nelson. The exhibits run through Saturday, June 13th. The pochoir process allows for Liz to control the paint in a way that is uniquely her own. Brad's custom furniture and functional artwork has a dedication to the material that combines his graphic design background with craftsmanship and dedication to work of the hand.
