If you have any interest in German expressionism, especially the work of the Blue Rider artists, then the Lenbachhaus is a must-visit art museum with unmatched collections of paintings by Jawlensky, Kandinsky and Münter. It was at the Lenbachhaus in 2018 that I came to the conclusion that an unattributed expressionist painting I purchased in 2004 was almost certainly by the hand of Gabriele Münter, a conclusion that was only reinforced after this May 2026 visit.

After visiting the Museum Neues and the Bauhaus Weimar Museum, I took the bus to see the “House for Martians,” the only work of architecture by the Bauhaus school in Weimar. The site is a little out of the way, but worth the effort even if you’re only casually interested in modernist architecture and history.

The only thing I knew about this museum was that it had a lifetime cast of Rodin’s “Age of Bronze,” so I was pleasantly surprised to find a diverse and thorough collection of high-quality paintings, sculptures, drawings and even furniture inside its well-lighted exhibition halls. Instead of buying individual museum tickets, I bought the “Modernism Card” for $20, which included admission to the Museum Neues, the Bauhaus Museum across the street, and several other modernist sites located in and around Weimar.

Photos of artwork on display as of May 20, 2026 at Museum Gunzenhauser in Chemnitz, Germany. The museum has a large room dedicated to the paintings of Otto Dix and the most impressive collection of works by Der Blaue Reiter artists I’ve seen outside the Lenbachaus museum in Munich. It takes a little effort to get to Chemnitz and Museum Gunzenhauser, but for lovers of German expressionism the journey is well worth the time and effort.

Photos of artwork on display as of May 15, 2026 at the Alte Nationalgalerie in Berlin, Germany. Unless you’re a big fan of German art from the mid-1800s to the early 1900s, you can probably skip this museum if you’re short on time. The collection consists mostly of uninspiring landscapes and still lifes with just a couple dozen or so quality figure paintings and sculptures (see photos). Despite my unenthusiastic reaction to the collection, I felt the entrance fee of $16 was reasonable and I didn’t regret the hour plus I spent at the museum.

Photos of artwork on display as of My 15, 2026 at the Brücke Museum in Berlin, Germany. I had high hopes for this museum being a big fan of German expressionism but, unfortunately, the part of the collection on display consisted mainly of jewelry, rugs, furniture and craftwork and not the drawings and paintings I was looking forward to seeing. I don’t want to discourage anyone from visiting, but I would set your expectations at an appropriate level and don’t go expecting to see loads of expressionist masterpieces.
