Meet the real star of the show! ⭐🪷 The night-blooming, sex-changing flower of the 𝘝𝘪𝘤𝘵𝘰𝘳𝘪𝘢 𝘤𝘳𝘶𝘻𝘪𝘢𝘯𝘢 ‘Santa Cruz’ waterlily. Learn more ⬇️

Each bloom lasts just two days, opening twice in its lifetime. On the first evening, the white flower opens and enters its female phase, releasing a sweet, pineapple-like scent and a heat that attracts beetles. By morning, it closes, keeping the insects inside.

During the day, while the beetles are trapped, the flower transitions from female to male, changing color from white to pink and coating the beetle in pollen. Upon opening on the second evening, the flower releases the pollen-covered beetles, which are then drawn to another first-night bloom, effectively cross-pollinating the plants.

This intricate process not only maximizes reproductive success for the plant but also provides food and shelter for the beetles, creating a mutually beneficial relationship between flower and pollinator.

Stay tuned for more content! Follow The Official Waterlily Weigh-Off to see all the entries!

⚠️ There are no 𝘝𝘪𝘤𝘵𝘰𝘳𝘪𝘢 𝘤𝘳𝘶𝘻𝘪𝘢𝘯𝘢 blooming now at the Gardens, but several buds will open soon.

James and Pumpkin, our Denver Botanic Gardens Chatfield Farms working cats, have major FOMO watching all of the shenanigans and insisted on a waterlily-themed update. What do you think? Can they pull off the look? 🤠

⚠️ Did our exceptional editing skills trick you? Unfortunately, James and Pumpkin did not come to York Street for a waterlily photoshoot. They probably wouldn't have enjoyed the water. 😆

Help us name our Victoria waterlily and ask us questions!  🤠🪷 The winning name will be selected by Vanessa aka Vanessa Nerdy Naturalist!

If you haven’t seen any of the gazillion waterlily videos yet, follow The Official Waterlily Weigh-Off to catch up on this year’s competition. Gardens, zoos, growers and more from around the world compete so see how much weight their Victoria waterlily leaves can hold. You DON’T want to miss it! 🎬🪷🎉

Diversity thrives with a little disturbance. 🌱🌼

Our beautiful Oak Savannah at Denver Botanic Gardens Chatfield Farms is a reminder that healthy ecosystems aren’t always untouched ecosystems. Grazing, fire, mowing and even prairie dogs can help prevent a few plant species from taking over and create space for a much richer variety of life.

Here, carefully managed mowing and burning help maintain the incredible tapestry of native plants growing throughout the prairie. 🌾🦋🐝
