A river narrowing toward the far light, until the water almost gives way to it.

Andrzej Skorut's "Where the River Vanishes into Light" leads Serene Landscapes, a solo exhibition of quiet, layered oil landscapes of the American West, opening Saturday, July 25 at Gallery 1261. Born in Krakow and based in Salt Lake City, Skorut builds these views in thin layers of oil, glazing and scraping until earlier passages show through. Calm from across the room, dense with buried color up close. Also in the show, "Whispers on the Mountain Lake," "Moon Rise," "Reflections," "Where Stillness Follows the Water," and "Winter's Quiet Flow."

On view July 25 through August 15. Opening reception Saturday, July 25, 6 to 8 PM, with the artist in attendance.
