The Wallace Centers of Iowa

At its 2 historic sites in Des Moines and Orient, WCI connects people, food and the land. The Country Life Center in Orient is the birthplace farm of Henry A.

WCI includes two properties on the National Register of Historic Places. The Wallace House in Des Moines is the home of "Uncle Henry" Wallace, the first editor of Wallaces' Farmer magazine. Wallace, U.S. Vice President, Secretary of Agriculture, and Secretary of Commerce during the Roosevelt administration and founder of Pioneer Hi-Bred seed corn company.

Abundance To Go happening today at the Wallace House from 3-6 pm!

Fresh herbs, including rosemary, oregano and mint, cherry tomatoes, leeks, chard and beets are available for purchase from the Wallace Farm.

Also pictured is asparagus gazpacho which was on the menu for those that pre-ordered takeout.

This summer we're hosting four magical Pizza on the Prairie events at the Wallace Farm.

The Wallace legacy helped shape agriculture in Iowa and beyond. Now, the Wallace Centers of Iowa is looking for a Development Director to help grow the next generation of impact.

This role will lead fundraising efforts supporting two historic sites, agricultural innovation programming, and food security and rural community impact.

If you have a track record of closing major gifts and you want to do that work for an organization with a genuinely compelling story to tell, this is the role.

Nearly 50 volunteers from Corteva joined us at the Wallace Farm this past Friday to help with spring cleaning around the farm property.

Together we accomplished so much! Volunteers helped clean up and mulch all the flower gardens, get the shade cloth on the hoop building, install the tomato fence, remove the old fence in the parking area, pick up sticks in the orchard, power wash the deck, and prep new flower beds near the new stage.

We also honored the new beautiful stage made possible by support from Corteva in celebration of 100 years of Pioneer.

A lot of projects going on at the Farm this Spring. Was finally able to get the Prairie burned off last night. Also put a new roof on the red shed this week. Big thank you to Eric Stewart for all his work on the red sh3d and the new stage.

We want to extend a big THANK YOU to the interior design team at Workspace / Storey Kenworthy for spending some of their volunteer hours at the Wallace House last Friday.

They helped with cleaning up our kitchen garden spaces and planted our pansies on the front porch--a tradition to honor Henry A. Wallace's mother, May Brodhead Wallace, who taught him to cross-breed pansies.

We're looking for a friendly go-getter to join the WCI team this summer as the Wallace Farm Coordinator.

This part-time, seasonal role will support our programs and events including Pizza on the Prairie at the Wallace Farm this season. We're looking for someone who's organized, self-directed and loves connecting with our guests and tourists.

20-30 hours/week (flexible)
$25/hour
Must be available most Friday evenings, June through August.
