A look back at our World Food Prize Laureates:

Dr. Shakuntala Haraksingh Thilsted, native of Trinidad and Tobago and a citizen of Denmark, received the 2021 World Food Prize for her groundbreaking research, critical insights and landmark innovations in developing holistic, nutrition-sensitive approaches to aquaculture and food systems. By bringing together interdisciplinary and international collaborators, she drove transformations in aquatic food systems to deliver improved nutrition, resilient ecosystems and secure livelihoods for millions of vulnerable people across the globe.

Flashback Friday: take a look back at the Hall of Laureates during renovation versus now!

The Borlaug Ballroom is the single largest room in the Hall of Laureates and the space that has been most transformed, located on the south side of the Rotunda. In the original library design, this area served as the Stacks Room and was actually a two-story space, separated by a glass floor and completely filled with bookcases. The room was a plain, utilitarian space.

The original design can still be seen, as one part of the glass floor has been preserved as a balcony. The historic placement of the bookcases is marked in the new wood floors with a diagonal woodgrain pattern, suggesting their original location.

This storage area has now been transformed into an elegant gathering space honoring Dr. Borlaug.

A look back at our World Food Prize Laureates:

The 1993 World Food Prize was awarded to He Kang, former Minister of Agriculture of the People's Republic of China, for implementing the reform policies that enabled China to become self-sufficient in basic food for the first time in modern history. This major accomplishment – which Minister He was able to achieve in little more than a decade – became all the more impressive when one considers that China, with over one billion people, has 22 percent of the world's population yet only 7 percent of the world’s arable land.

A look back at our World Food Prize Laureates:

Simon N. Groot of the Netherlands received the 2019 World Food Prize for his transformative role in empowering millions of smallholder farmers in more than 60 countries to earn greater incomes through enhanced vegetable production, benefiting hundreds of millions of consumers with greater access to nutritious vegetables for healthy diets. As founder and leader of East-West Seed, his initiative over the past four decades has developed a dynamic, smallholder-centric tropical vegetable seed industry, starting in Southeast Asia and spreading through Asia, Africa and Latin America.
