Call for Art: The Metro Detroit Body

What does the body of the Metro Detroit region look like? Is it shaped by labor and lineage— nourished by comfort food, scented with to***co, breathing heavily through shifts in factories or fields? Or is it sculpted by contemporary fitness culture, forged in the fluorescence of gyms and wellness centers, striving toward hyper-efficiency and idealized form?

Maybe it’s something softer, more private— sentimentally charged by grass-stained summer evenings or long dark winters, hands exploring skin under flannel, under the comforter. Or does it emerge from, and fit into, the post industrial Midwest by becoming a cyborg? Wired into machines and medical systems, tracked and surveilled by digital devices, managed by the algorithms of modern health.

Announcing our June exhibition:”How do you know the Whitetail?” A solo show of work by Taylor Knight!
In this show Taylor uses sculpture, painting, installation, and performance as she explores human relationships to the natural world through the example of the whitetail deer.

“My work strives to advocate for sustainability and mindfulness in our relationships with plants and animals because I believe that dismantling the western colonial attitude of environment-as-resource is paramount in our struggle for climate justice. The belief demonstrated by corporations and many world leaders that the earth is a resource to be mined for profit is at the root of the climate crisis. I believe that we must challenge this attitude in our own lives and pressure lawmakers into pursuing intentional and sustainable relationships with our environment and non-human neighbors. Not only do I believe this mindset of environmental reciprocity to be a useful tool in addressing the climate crisis, but I believe it is also a powerful coping mechanism for climate anxiety, grounding oneself and providing a deeper connection with our environment. This exhibition provides a specific example of an inter-species relationship and meditates on how people relate to deer regionally in the United States. It calls to attention our broken relationship with food, and suggests a more mindful approach toward consumption. All of this serves the broader intent of encouraging environmental reciprocity as a means to address climate issues both personally and systemically.“

Looking forward to sharing the work and the conversation with everyone in June!
