Posted • Rock ’n’ roll photographer Leni Sinclair autographs the beams of Detroit’s Scarab Club, signing an exclusive guestbook of sorts that includes artists like LeRoy Foster, Diego Rivera, Marcel Duchamp, and Isamu Noguchi, among others.

Sinclair signed the beams during the opening reception for ‘Detroit Leni: a Leni Sinclair Retrospective’ on Sunday.

As a documenter of Detroit’s counterculture scene of the 1960s and ’70s who was once married to John Sinclair, the late political activist and former manager of the influential rock band MC5, Leni had a front-row view so to speak of the turbulent time period; the Sinclairs co-founded the White Panther Party, an anti-racist socialist group aligned with the Black Panthers. Her photos were published in , , and , and in 2016 she was named the recipient of the Kresge Eminent Artist Award.

SCARAB CLUB
110TH ANNUAL BOAR'S HEAD DINNER & AWARDS

Cocktails, Dinner & Afterglow 6 pm - $140 pp or $275/couple
Afterglow Only 9 pm - $50 pp
Attendance limited to 80 persons

Originally known as the Boar's Head Christmas Dinner during the nascent years of the Scarab Club, this tradition was modeled after so-called Henry VIII dinners. To inaugurate these celebrations the head of a succulent boar was paraded along with other tempting delicacies among the merrymakers.
For over a century, Scarabs have gathered on the second Saturday of December to commune with fellow members and welcome new initiates, who are invited to meander among the tables as emissaries of Bacchus, pouring wine and becoming acquainted with their art-loving comrades.
