Popps Emporium
Popps Emporium is a community resource space, storefront incubator, and tool lending library for artists and neighbors. Located on the Hamtramck Detroit border along Carpenter Street on the sprawling campus of Popps Packing- an artist-run, neighborhood organization.
The Popps Emporium project began in 2012 when we bought the blighted storefront with attached house across the street and invited artists to create an art installation in collaboration with the building and the history hidden inside. The visible process of rehabilitating Popps Emporium, which is nestled in a strip of houses along the Carpenter corridor, allowed us to meet new neighbors, to learn about the history of this community and about the various skills that people living here have. These conversations inspired us took look at Popps Emporium, beyond a space for artists and as a place for neighbors to gather, share information and resources so that we can collaboratively begin to build the neighborhood we envision moving forward.
