Glorious architecture and interesting neighborhoods are enjoyed, still alive and vibrant with a sense of community, history, and friendly people without projection

Finally, I had a chance to hit dem peddles over the Holiday weekend, as work has been demanding. I figured I would check out a section of the J.L.G. trail to see how the "progress" has been coming over the 2-years I have been visiting and filming just this
1-block section? Still incomplete! Instead of talking about something else let alone this poor performance or "sidewalk replacements" how about shutting up and finishing the Job, it's been 13-years already?

Anyways the east side streets are always a joy, filled with emptiness and divine Nature.

The Divine Emptiness of Detroit took on new meaning yesterday, as I headed out early to meet up with Tims Cinco de Mayo parade ride. I took down hit one of the very, very, few sections of the that is for the most part, “completed”. South of W. Chicago, the divine emptiness of Detroit on a Sunday morning, was for Real, just me and the Birds! I found it strange to see a mile marker stating 14.6 just before the trail abruptly dead ends at Warren Ave, with NO future or continued work planned or “figured out” yet. But hey, there is always Central Ave. that runs right through the neighborhoods, south into the heart of SW Detroit.

This year’s annual Parade was not mentioned by any of the Local TV News agencies, or the Detroit News, Free Press and even the Metro Times?
The only thing I can imagine is that they did not want to inspire the local ICE HUB of Agents to show up and challenged the well-armed testosterone Machismo that was joyously waving the flag of Mexico! Southwest Detroit has been an enclave of Central American folks for 75 years, doesn’t that qualify for a Historical get-off-my-back status? Any way’s, Tim was rolling and I was chafing, so near Grand River I said my Fairwells and turned left right into the strong wind and made my way back up one of the original Indian trails to Oakman Blvd.

Definite cultural experience, and if you’ve never run your bike through the neighborhoods of southwest Detroit, this is definitely a ride you’d like to attend!

I waited till 3:10 PM yesterday, right when the Temps reached 70 degrees. No more excuses, sore knee included! I put on the shorts and sandals and headed down to Island View to see my Friends at . On the way back north on 2nd Ave. a younger lady excused herself as she passed by me on her bike. Inspired I picked up my pace and caught up, right around McNichols where again she said excuse me, I am turning left.

The call went out earlier in the week for a Sunsday Funsday ride as the temps were going to be in the low 50's. Some the old Crew had assembled. The original Southwest-Detroit O.G. “Bag Cog” showed up for his first ride of this season. Jen from the Dearborn Bike Riding crew was already there and waiting and a new fellow named Moun-Mon, aka the French-Canadian-Moroccan joined in his first of many for 2026. I took the group north through what I like to call the “Divine Emptiness" old Eastside empty streets with the few distant houses, dotting the landscape. Old champs from the History of Detroit, remnants of the Victorian Era 1880-90's. I led the group through one of the Many old and polluted industrial Corridors, down beat up-potholed streets with zero truck traffic Sunday. We made it over the 449 E. Milwaukee Ave. for some back patio laughter and some strategic call out’s. A great time to Early Spring.

Was not up for the windy meet up with Tim for the Parade ride @10:30 AM (not in group shape yet). Around 2PM I looked out the window and saw my Honeybee's Buzzing about, they inspired me to get up and out anyways!

With 55 degrees and sunny the forecast for Friday I made the plans early in the week to head back out and test the body, and attempt to get back in good bike riding shape. The amazing thing about the city of Detroit is, that in all of its vastness there is still so much yet to be discovered, even after 26 years of riding-exploring. Yesterday I decided to check out the old and the new on one trip. First up was the aka the For 117 years it’s been right there south of I-94 and what was once the sprawling Polish City of Hamtramck. Back in 1981-1985 the local corruption destroyed complete viable neighborhoods and1000’s of viable homes so that General Motors could have its Pole Town Plant, (Automobile Agenda at all Costs)! Anyways there is a security guard stationed outside so need to worry, lock up or bring inside. Once you enter through the door its like going to visit Grandmas house, back somewhere in time. Since the Covid-Shakedown they have been keeping limited hours, basically a lunch club only. If you’re going to ride over and check it out best to plan the venture mid-day. (Shout out to Bobby the Bike rider, he was already there eating lunch with many friends). Next up was the journey down to Island View to see my old Friend Racheal at the in the Island View Neighborhood. For the last several weeks I had been reading about a new place called the I was hoping to check it out some day in the future and low and behold its right across the street form Rachel’s place! How cool is that? Now I can bring my trunks and take a soak before dressing back up and riding north to . Along the way north I had to stop in and see my friend the King of Cramps at which is becoming more and more a destination bike in, down, or over spot! Inside I meet a couple of cool Bike riders who rolled down from Madison Heights. I sent them rolling over to checkout the “cool church place they been hearing about” and then made my way back to the North.

Hot off the press, Metro Toledo continues to rapidly expand its biking infrastructure, with a start to finish conservative construction practice and approach, that actually mean something to the community and fellow bike riders. ......Meanwhile the trail in is splattered like buckshot all over town, incomplete and already breaking apart. If you want to see how biking infrastructure really works . If you want to Guess where to go, with no plan on how to get to from one section to the next semi complete section of the ,come to Detroit, and don't forget to watch out for the cars that continue running most of the stop signs.

on the street least traveled.

Re-discovered some great old photographs from back in the day. Truly looking forward to clear streets next week, it's time to get off the trainer, head outside and ride!

25 years ago, when Big Mike and I started we typically rode in from the suburbs, through Palmer Park and headed down 3rd Ave. The streets were empty, all the way to an empty midtown. Honest Johns place was the first new construction in decades, and in all honesty, Honest John started Bike Detroit and handed it off to Mike and me. 25 years later, Mid-town is filled/fueled with more cars than anyone could imagine. It's worse than the suburbs, Birmingham in particular. Heading back north on Second Ave. once you ride North of Grand Blvd. car crazy disappears and with mostly empty streets, a hidden Gem . Originally Flint based, a great place to stop by and wish the happy 33rd Birthday! !
