The WORLDY exhibition at the Metropolitan Museum of Design Detroit (MM-O-DD) opened its doors in a celebration of global creativityโ€”where photographers, fashion designers, painters, sculptors, and collectors stood side by side, each honoring the heritage that shaped them. This installment brought together the cultural voices of Romania, Scotland, Haiti, Russia, Singapore, and Italy.

(It should be noted that not every work of art presented must be directly linked to its place of origin. (MM-O-DD) gives artists the freedom to express themselves through their heritage in whatever way speaks to them โ€” honoring their lineage, celebrating their artistic journeys, and giving value to the beautiful genealogies that shape who they are - Colecศ›ia Etnograficฤƒ Capizzi took an ethnographic approach in honoring Romaniaโ€™s identity, using folk dress and tapestry as a lens to reveal the nationโ€™s craftsmanship, regional diversity, and ancestral memory.)

For me, this night was a profound moment in my journey of identity, strengthening ties within the Romanian community here in Detroit, Michigan while also opening a window for others to discover Romania. The event itself was a tapestry of worldsโ€”a moment where each artist and each representing country came together to present, connect, and inspire.

This is only another page to turn in the bookโ€”may this exhibition open new doors, spark new conversations, and bring even more people closer to the heart of Romanian folk art.

M-am nฤƒscut รฎn Mehedinศ›i, Romรขnia, ศ™i am fost adoptat de pฤƒrinศ›i italo-americani cรขnd aveam doar nouฤƒ luni.

Ca fiu adoptiv, am purtat mereu รฎntrebarea: De unde vin? Aceastฤƒ รฎntrebare mi-a fost busolฤƒ โ€” m-a condus spre poveศ™tile, ศ›esฤƒturile ศ™i arta locului รฎn care m-am nฤƒscut. รŽn 2017, รฎn ultimul meu an de liceu, am รฎnceput sฤƒ adun costume tradiศ›ionale romรขneศ™ti โ€” veste, catrinศ›e ศ™i ii cusute cu rฤƒbdare ศ™i memorie. Aศ™a s-a nฤƒscut Colecศ›ia Etnograficฤƒ Capizzi.

Ceea ce a รฎnceput ca o simplฤƒ curiozitate s-a transformat รฎntr-o chemare. Prin aceste piese am redescoperit frumuseศ›ea rฤƒdฤƒcinilor mele ศ™i vocile meศ™teศ™ugarilor care au cusut istoria รฎn fiecare fir. Colecศ›ia mea cuprinde astฤƒzi costume din toate regiunile Romรขniei, cu un accent deosebit pe Banat ศ™i Oltenia โ€” locuri pline de culoare, credinศ›ฤƒ ศ™i simboluri.

Prin aceastฤƒ colecศ›ie, รฎmi doresc sฤƒ inspir oameni โ€” romรขni, adoptaศ›i, sau oricine รฎศ™i cautฤƒ originea โ€” sฤƒ priveascฤƒ รฎnapoi cu mรขndrie ศ™i รฎnainte cu sens. Cultura nu trฤƒieศ™te doar รฎn muzee; ea trฤƒieศ™te รฎn inimile celor care aleg sฤƒ o pฤƒstreze vie.

I was born in Mehedinศ›i, Romania, and adopted by Italian-American parents when I was only nine months old. My journey began far from the land that gave me life, in Detroit, Michigan โ€” a city that became home while my heart quietly searched for another.

Growing up, my parents always told me the truth about who I was. They spoke of Romania, a place I had never seen but somehow felt connected to. They encouraged me to explore where I came from, to understand that identity is not something we inherit once, but something we continue to build.

As an adoptee, I have always carried a question โ€” Where do I come from? That question became my compass, leading me toward the stories, the fabrics, and the artistry of my birthplace. In 2017, during my final year of high school, I began collecting traditional Romanian garments โ€” vests, aprons, and blouses woven with patience and memory. That was the birth of Colecศ›ia Etnograficฤƒ Capizzi.

What started as curiosity became a lifelong calling. Through these pieces, I rediscovered the beauty of my roots and the voices of artisans who stitched history into every thread. My collection now embraces garments from across Romania, with a special focus on Banat and Oltenia โ€” regions rich in color, faith, and symbolism.

Each exhibition I organize in the Detroit area โ€” often at the local Romanian Orthodox Church โ€” is a way of bringing the homeland closer. It is my offering to the community, and to myself: a reminder that distance cannot erase belonging.

Through this work, I hope to inspire others โ€” Romanians, adoptees, and anyone searching for connection โ€” to look back with pride, and forward with purpose. Culture is not just preserved in museums; it lives in the hearts of those who choose to remember.

Costumes in marchizet material from the Banat Plains

Moale ศ™i fluidฤƒ, lejeritatea ศ›esฤƒturii contrasteazฤƒ frumos cu broderia mai densฤƒ ศ™i elaboratฤƒ.

Marchizetul joacฤƒ un rol semnificativ รฎn istoria costumelor ศ™i textilelor romรขneศ™ti, รฎn special รฎn secolele al XIX-lea ศ™i al XX-lea. Acesta reflectฤƒ schimbฤƒrile sociale, economice ศ™i culturale din Romรขnia ruralฤƒ a acelei perioade.

Pe mฤƒsurฤƒ ce comunitฤƒศ›ile rurale au รฎntรขlnit stiluri urbane ศ™i materiale importate, a ajuns sฤƒ simbolizeze gustul ศ™i aspiraศ›ia modernฤƒ. Cu toate acestea, รฎn ciuda asocierii sale cu sofisticarea urbanฤƒ, marchizetul a rฤƒmas รฎnrฤƒdฤƒcinat รฎn portul etnografic tradiศ›ional, servind ca o punte รฎntre moศ™tenirea satului ศ™i tendinศ›ele modei รฎn evoluศ›ie.
-

Soft and flowing, the lightness of the fabric contrasts beautifully with denser-elaborate embroidery.

Marchizet holds a significant role in the history of Romanian costumes and textiles, particularly in the 19th & 20th century. It reflects social, economic and cultural changes in rural Romania of the time period. Thought to be derived from the French material โ€œmarquisetteโ€ / adapted to Romanian as โ€œmarchizetโ€- a lightweight open weave fabric popular in aristocratic circles.

Traditional Romanian clothing was typically made of heavier, homespun materials such as h**p or thick linen โ€œpรขnza de casaโ€.

Marchizet was considered a refined, special-occasion fabric. As rural communities encountered urban styles and imported materials, it came to symbolize modern taste and aspiration. Yet despite its association with urban sophistication, marchizet remained rooted in traditional ethnographic dress, serving as a bridge between village heritage and evolving fashion trends.
