The WORLDY exhibition at the Metropolitan Museum of Design Detroit (MM-O-DD) opened its doors in a celebration of global creativity—where photographers, fashion designers, painters, sculptors, and collectors stood side by side, each honoring the heritage that shaped them. This installment brought together the cultural voices of Romania, Scotland, Haiti, Russia, Singapore, and Italy.

(It should be noted that not every work of art presented must be directly linked to its place of origin. (MM-O-DD) gives artists the freedom to express themselves through their heritage in whatever way speaks to them — honoring their lineage, celebrating their artistic journeys, and giving value to the beautiful genealogies that shape who they are - Colecția Etnografică Capizzi took an ethnographic approach in honoring Romania’s identity, using folk dress and tapestry as a lens to reveal the nation’s craftsmanship, regional diversity, and ancestral memory.)

For me, this night was a profound moment in my journey of identity, strengthening ties within the Romanian community here in Detroit, Michigan while also opening a window for others to discover Romania. The event itself was a tapestry of worlds—a moment where each artist and each representing country came together to present, connect, and inspire.

This is only another page to turn in the book—may this exhibition open new doors, spark new conversations, and bring even more people closer to the heart of Romanian folk art.

Born and educated in Iași, Romania, Andreea Bordeianu began her career in global education as an assistant lecturer at “Alexandru Ioan Cuza” University before emigrating to the United States in 1997. Her work in education continued across the ocean—first as an elementary teacher and counselor, then as an academic adviser and instructor at Oakland University, where she also earned her Ph.D. in Educational Leadership and led community-focused global education projects. Her research on global competencies brought her to Harvard’s Global Education Thinktank. Deeply committed to Romanian heritage preservation, she has taught at The Romanian School in Michigan, supported cultural initiatives, and helped organize significant community events and projects.

M-am născut în Mehedinți, România, și am fost adoptat de părinți italo-americani când aveam doar nouă luni. Drumul meu a început departe de pământul care mi-a dat viață, în Detroit, Michigan SUA — un oraș care a devenit acasă, deși inima mea căuta mereu altceva.

Am crescut cu adevărul spus deschis. Părinții mei mi-au vorbit mereu despre România, o țară pe care nu o cunoșteam, dar pe care o simțeam aproape. M-au încurajat să-mi caut rădăcinile și să înțeleg că identitatea nu este un dar primit o singură dată, ci o construcție continuă a sufletului.

Ca fiu adoptiv, am purtat mereu întrebarea: De unde vin? Această întrebare mi-a fost busolă — m-a condus spre poveștile, țesăturile și arta locului în care m-am născut. În 2017, în ultimul meu an de liceu, am început să adun costume tradiționale românești — veste, catrințe și ii cusute cu răbdare și memorie. Așa s-a născut Colecția Etnografică Capizzi.

Ceea ce a început ca o simplă curiozitate s-a transformat într-o chemare. Prin aceste piese am redescoperit frumusețea rădăcinilor mele și vocile meșteșugarilor care au cusut istoria în fiecare fir. Colecția mea cuprinde astăzi costume din toate regiunile României, cu un accent deosebit pe Banat și Oltenia — locuri pline de culoare, credință și simboluri.

Fiecare expoziție pe care o organizez în zona Detroitului — adesea la Biserica Ortodoxă Română — este o punte între lumi, o apropiere de țara de unde am pornit. Este darul meu pentru comunitate și pentru mine însumi: o amintire că distanța nu poate șterge apartenența.

Prin această colecție, îmi doresc să inspir oameni — români, adoptați, sau oricine își caută originea — să privească înapoi cu mândrie și înainte cu sens. Cultura nu trăiește doar în muzee; ea trăiește în inimile celor care aleg să o păstreze vie.

I was born in Mehedinți, Romania, and adopted by Italian-American parents when I was only nine months old. My journey began far from the land that gave me life, in Detroit, Michigan — a city that became home while my heart quietly searched for another.

Growing up, my parents always told me the truth about who I was. They spoke of Romania, a place I had never seen but somehow felt connected to. They encouraged me to explore where I came from, to understand that identity is not something we inherit once, but something we continue to build.

As an adoptee, I have always carried a question — Where do I come from? That question became my compass, leading me toward the stories, the fabrics, and the artistry of my birthplace. In 2017, during my final year of high school, I began collecting traditional Romanian garments — vests, aprons, and blouses woven with patience and memory. That was the birth of Colecția Etnografică Capizzi.

What started as curiosity became a lifelong calling. Through these pieces, I rediscovered the beauty of my roots and the voices of artisans who stitched history into every thread. My collection now embraces garments from across Romania, with a special focus on Banat and Oltenia — regions rich in color, faith, and symbolism.

Each exhibition I organize in the Detroit area — often at the local Romanian Orthodox Church — is a way of bringing the homeland closer. It is my offering to the community, and to myself: a reminder that distance cannot erase belonging.

Through this work, I hope to inspire others — Romanians, adoptees, and anyone searching for connection — to look back with pride, and forward with purpose. Culture is not just preserved in museums; it lives in the hearts of those who choose to remember.

Moale și fluidă, lejeritatea țesăturii contrastează frumos cu broderia mai densă și elaborată.

Marchizetul joacă un rol semnificativ în istoria costumelor și textilelor românești, în special în secolele al XIX-lea și al XX-lea. Acesta reflectă schimbările sociale, economice și culturale din România rurală a acelei perioade. Se crede că derivă din materialul francez „marquisette” / adaptat în limba românească ca „marchizet” - o țesătură ușoară cu țesătură deschisă, populară în cercurile aristocratice.

Îmbrăcămintea tradițională românească era de obicei confecționată din materiale mai grele, țesute acasă, cm ar fi cânepa sau inul gros „pânza de casă”.

Marchizetul era considerat o țesătură rafinată, pentru ocazii speciale. Pe măsură ce comunitățile rurale au întâlnit stiluri urbane și materiale importate, a ajuns să simbolizeze gustul și aspirația modernă. Cu toate acestea, în ciuda asocierii sale cu sofisticarea urbană, marchizetul a rămas înrădăcinat în portul etnografic tradițional, servind ca o punte între moștenirea satului și tendințele modei în evoluție.

Soft and flowing, the lightness of the fabric contrasts beautifully with denser-elaborate embroidery.

Marchizet holds a significant role in the history of Romanian costumes and textiles, particularly in the 19th & 20th century. It reflects social, economic and cultural changes in rural Romania of the time period. Thought to be derived from the French material “marquisette” / adapted to Romanian as “marchizet”- a lightweight open weave fabric popular in aristocratic circles.

Traditional Romanian clothing was typically made of heavier, homespun materials such as h**p or thick linen “pânza de casa”.

Marchizet was considered a refined, special-occasion fabric. As rural communities encountered urban styles and imported materials, it came to symbolize modern taste and aspiration. Yet despite its association with urban sophistication, marchizet remained rooted in traditional ethnographic dress, serving as a bridge between village heritage and evolving fashion trends.
