In addition to our wonderful Print Museum started out being a drug store, Dr. Jessup’s office and even a barber shop. Dr. Jessup & his wife built the structure that still stands today in 1909. Read more about it at the Museum.
Then in 1924, Mr. Thomas S. Waffle purchased the building with his wife Maude and family, living in the upstairs apartment. Thomas operated the Diagonal Reporter. Harold Turnbull was his sole employee having apprenticed in April, 1922, aged 16, and just prior to his graduation from Diagonal High School. In the later 20’s when a Mergenthaler Linotype was installed. More info at the museum.
Harold Turnbull took over the business 1937. He and wife Mildred and son Miles operated the paper till 1972, when they retired.
Meanwhile our awesome little city was platted in 1889. It has grown over the years and as some do at some point it starts shrinking. The only sad thing now in 2021 our school is still going even though it is the smallest in the state but we do have a beautiful Church and a lot of wonderful people that still love this small city and each other.
Come see our Museum, enjoy the Printing equipment and our awesome History. We even have a great story about our name, Diagonal and how it came to be.
OPEN; every weekend 2: P.M. – 4: P,M, and also Monday Labor Day 11: A.M. – 5: P.M. or so.

Before we introduce you to our Print Museum, which is the only original one in the Midwest, we want to start with our town, Diagonal. It is a warm community with a lot of interesting history. Our name, is very interesting as it is the “Only Diagonal in the World”. It was platted on March 30,1889 and recorded on April 3, 1889 in the Courthouse of Ringgold County, Mt. Ayr, Iowa.
The Museum building, a large two story with many windows, built by Dr. A.E. Jessup in 1909. For 10 years the downstairs used for Doctor office and Pharmacy and the upstairs their home.
The Diagonal Reporter came to be in 1924 by Thomas S. Waffle. Then in 1937 Harold Turnbull purchased the business and ran it for 50 years till retiring.
With all the original printing equipment still there, in 1983 it was opened as a Museum. Since then it has become a rich source of history. There is so much to see so we invite you to come visit and take a history walk with us.
