On loan to the Dover Historical Society from the Boston Athenaeum, Boston, MA

Exhibited: Boston Athenaeum, happy hippies and others (one-woman show), 1973

Stelai date to ancient times and were often an upright carved-stone slab or column which were typically used as commemorative markers. In her 1925 travel diary, Peabody noted while visiting ruins in Athens that she was particularly taken by the steles she observed there.

The Boston Athenaeum purchased Garden Stele at her 1973 show.

Snellen (1836-1928) was a legendary Grand Banks fishing boat captain and had served as 1st Gunners Mate aboard the ironclad warship, the USS Monitor, during the Civil War. This is Peabody's only known large portrait bronze.
