Residents worked hard, believed in progress, took pride in their community and sat down together to enjoy the evening meal. Such was the case for one of Dover’s most famous residents, Ernest “Mooney” Warther. Born in 1885 to Swiss immigrants, Mooney, as he was known to all, would leave a mark in the community that is still visible to this day. Mooney found his way out of the steel mills where he w

orked and into his workshop where he began making knives in order to make carvings of ebony, ivory, and walnut, a hobby that would later make him a recognizable figure across the nation. With only a second grade education, Mooney would become a master carver that can only be explained through his genius. Noted professors from Case Western Reserve explained the degree of skill in the creation of the pliers tree, one of Mooney’s more unique carvings, would require an advanced degree in mathematics. His talent lives on in members of his family and his story is told in a family-friendly museum that celebrates the life of this remarkable man. Situated on eight acres in the tree-lined residential neighborhood where Mooney once lived, the Swiss chalet-styled Warther Museum gives visitors a glimpse into the life of Mooney, his wife Frieda and their family. Still operated by the third and fourth generation of the Warther family, Warther Museum features Mooney’s home, restored to appear as it would when he and Frieda started their life together. Mooney’s original workshop, built in 1912, features his tools, an extensive collection of Native American arrowheads and the fireplace where he would forge the steel he used in the kitchen knives. In the museum are the priceless collection of 64 ebony, ivory, and walnut trains carved by Mooney at different stages of his life. Each carving is painstakingly accurate with moving parts that are remarkably to scale. The truly unique button house is home to Frieda Warther’s collection of more than 73,000 buttons displayed on the walls and ceiling of the quaint structure located just outside the original Warther home on the edge of the garden. Throughout every season of each year, the Swiss styled garden is meticulously maintained. It remains a dear reminder to the Warther family of their proud Swiss heritage.

The completion of the Transcontinental Railroad occurred on May 10, 1869 and Mooney captured this moment in time by recreating the scene of the Driving of the Golden Spike. Mooney began carving great events in American Steam History after he completed the Evolution of the Steam Engine. He spent 40 years carving the evolution in his free time and couldn’t stop carving. Great events, like this, kept Mooney carving until his passing in 1973.

Each year we follow Frieda’s tradition and put in annuals among her perennials. Frieda began these gardens shortly after the family purchased the property in 1910. Although when the children were young, Frieda kept a large amount of vegetables in the gardens, she grew quite a few flowers as well. We spent approximately one working week to put in just around 4,000 annuals on the property. These are nestled in Frieda’s original gardens as well as dot the property for weddings and around the railroad equipment. If you are looking for a great place to visit, stop in and take the time to walk among the flowers. We are now on summer tour times. We have guided tours at 9:30, 11, 12:30, 2, and 3:30 every day!

Mooney loved the engine that broke the land-speed record on May 10, 1893 which was the Empire State Express Engine 999. This classic and iconic looking steamer was carved by Mooney five different times. One of those times he captured the engine pulling the train across a trestle bridge to dedicate the momentous event in steam history which broke that record. That carving is the largest piece Mooney ever created, finished at 11,000 carved pieces, taking him one year and four days to complete. If you have never seen this piece, it is certainly one you don’t want to miss!

We just can't believe that we have officially been a museum for 90 years! When Mooney opened his first museum on Mother's Day 1936 in a small 10 by 12 foot room, he never imagined that his legacy would transform into what it is today. Over the past 90 years, the museum has grown and evolved but his carvings, story, and tribute have remained the same. We want to thank everyone who has had a helping hand in supporting us over the years and to the city of Dover and our community. To help us celebrate 90, join us for WartherFest on June 12th and 13th! More information to come on the full schedule of events!

On December 1st, 1913 Mooney dedicated his life to capturing the Evolution of the Steam Engine in his carvings. He believed this project would take him his entire life to carve. He ended up completing it in 40 years, finishing on his birthday, October 30, 1953 with the completion of the Union Pacific Big Boy carving. This capture of steam in terms of transportation as well as what the steam engine held in the Industrial Revolution is one of the founding reasons why he chose to carve the steam engine. We love to celebrate all sorts of advancements in technology and it is amazing to look at how far society has come in our transportation. But here, we really love to celebrate the steam engine! If you haven’t been to the museum before, our largest exhibit space holds the Evolution of the Steam Engine in chronological order so you can walk steam history through Mooney’s carvings.
