Please join us this Thursday, September 3, 2026, at 12:00 pm for a free online artist talk with Mallery Quetawki and learn more about the fascinating work of this young artist who bridges science with art and cultural translation to help others.

Mallery Quetawki (Zuni Pueblo) is Artist-in-Residence and Communications & Outreach Specialist with the University of New Mexico’s Community Environmental Health Program. She is also a current 2025 Bloomberg American Health Initiative Fellow at the prestigious Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health, where she is in her first year as an MPH student.

Trained in biology and studio art (BS from UNM), she specializes in translating complex environmental health research into culturally resonant visual narratives for Indigenous communities. Her work integrates Zuni symbolism with Western science to foster dialogue on topics such as uranium contamination, DNA damage, and immune health. Quetawki’s art has been exhibited nationally, including in the Metropolitan Museum of Modern Art’s Grounded in Clay exhibition, and is permanently displayed at the Indian Pueblo Cultural Center in Albuquerque.

Please join us for a free online talk: "Tradition, Innovation, and Technology: Living Legacies of Juan Quezada and the Mata Ortiz Ceramic Community". with Maren P. Hopkins and Kelsey E. Hanson.

Juan Quezada (1940–2022) is celebrated internationally for pioneering the modern pottery tradition of Mata Ortiz, Chihuahua, through his extraordinary experimentation with local clays, pigments, and firing techniques inspired by the ancient ceramics of Paquimé. In this presentation, we explore Juan's stories, memories, and observations about the places where he gathered clay. We compare his lifetime of experience with scientific compositional analyses of those clay sources. Together, these perspectives reveal that Juan's artistry was more than technical skill—it emerged from a deep relationship with the land, shaped by curiosity, exploration, experimentation, and lived experience.

Maren Hopkins is an archaeologist and ethnographer with more than 26 years of experience leading cultural resource, ethnographic, and heritage projects throughout the U.S. Southwest and Mexico.

Dr. Kelsey Hanson is an Assistant Professor of Anthropology at the University of Texas at Arlington. Integrating interdisciplinary scientific methods with collaborative, community-based approaches to archaeology, her research explores the social roles of technology, materiality, and knowledge in the Greater Southwest and beyond.

Comcáac (Seri) Show & Sale
Saturday & Sunday, September 26th & 27th
10 AM - 4 PM

Make plans to join us on Saturday, September 26th, or Sunday, September 27th, from 10 am - 4 pm, for our Comcáac (Seri) Show & Sale. This year we will be featuring the work of Master artists Maria Francesca Moreno and Valentina Torres, both known for their incredible basketry, not only for their large pieces and tight weave, but also for their masterful designs. Carver, Miguel Estrella who was set to come will unfortunately not be able to join us. The artist will also be bringing an assortment of other work by Seri artists.

The Seri people of Sonora, Mexico, also known as the Comcáac, People of the Sea and Desert. With resilience in the Sonoran Desert, they have created beautiful art that they will share with us in September.

For those wanting to learn more about Seri Basketry, we recommend the recent title Baskets from the Seri Coast: Comcaac Weavers and Their Craft by documentary photographer David Burckhalter, published by University of Arizona Press, 2026. Burckhalter spent five decades documenting Seri traditions, history, baskets, and weavers. This beautiful book celebrates the resilience and artistry of these baskets and their makers.

Event is included with museum admission. Event is free for Amerind members.

Calling all Mountain Bike Racers....Registration is now open for our 8th Annual Texas Canyon Mountain Bike Race on Saturday, January 30, 2027. Take advantage of the early bird discount and register before September 30th.

Last year we opened our newer, more exciting racecourse. If you missed the event last year, join us this January to experience this thrilling course for yourself. We have two race options to choose from:

The Fulton Full Course: Where racers will do four laps (42 miles) of jeep trails and single track through the incredible boulders of Texas Canyon. Start time: 10:00 AM.

The Lockett Rocket Short Course: Racers will complete two laps (21 miles) of jeep trails and singletrack. Start time: 10:10 AM.

These Mountain Bike races are open to ages 12 +, with youth pricing available. Awards will be given to overall Male and Female in both races. Overall winners will also receive a piece of Native American art. First through Third place finishers in each age category will be awarded medals.

It's a fun day at Amerind. We start you off with free coffee or cocoa to warm you up and get you going. We have later start times, so no rushing to get here, and as we moved the event to late January, you no longer need to worry about the heat. Once you finish your race/ride, if you placed, pick up your award, then grab a well-deserved bite from one of the food trucks, then show your bib to explore the Amerind Museum and Art Galleries. Admission to the museum is included for all participating cyclists.

Attn: Interested Southern Arizona artists, passing along for anyone interested in applying to the Grand Canyon Conservancy's License Plate contest.

GCC is holding a design contest for the new Grand Canyon Arizona Specialty License Plate. We want to see what Grand Canyon means to Arizonians across the state, and we are encouraging anyone with a vision to submit their designs. Proceeds from the specialty plate will go towards protecting and preserving natural, cultural, and historic resources in the park.

The selected artist will receive a $1,000 cash prize, and have their artwork represent Grand Canyon on plates across the state. Submissions will be accepted through September 30th.

It would be nice to see an Indigenous artist's design represented on these plates!
