“Gordon C***s: Gidibaajimomin / We Tell Stories” opens today at the Minnesota Marine Art Museum. Gordon C***s is an artist, educator, and an enrolled member of the Lac Courte Oreilles Ojibwa Band of Lake Superior Indians of Wisconsin. The exhibition features 18 new artworks by C***s created for the exhibition, past works by C***s, and examples of early Woodland style artworks from Norval Morrisseau and Sam Ash.

“Woodland art style images are not a religion but a way of life. Stories of the images were told during the time when the Ojibwa people would gather in lodges during the season of snow. The stories are for teaching your role in the community and on how to participate in the Ojibwa community.” - Gordon C***s.

In northern Minnesota, 87 acres have been returned to the Grand Portage Band of Lake Superior Chippewa, a community whose connection to this region goes back generations.

The Grand Portage Band is part of the Anishinaabe (Ojibwe) people, with deep cultural and historical ties to the lands along Lake Superior. Returns like this often come through conservation efforts, land transfers, or partnerships aimed at restoring stewardship to tribal nations.

While 87 acres may seem small on a map, for many communities, land is not measured only in size —it is measured in meaning, responsibility, and continuity.

Across the United States, similar efforts continue as tribes work to regain stewardship of lands connected to their history, culture, and way of life.
Each return is not just land.
It is recognition.
