German-born artist Ruth Vollmer (1903 โ€“ 1982) arrived in New York City after emigrating from Berlin with her husband in 1935. By the 1960s the couple had cultivated a circle of friends in the art world including artists, critics, curators, and collectors. Among these were Robert Smithson, Donald Judd, Sol LeWitt, Carl Andre, and her close friend Eva Hesse. Vollmer had her first solo exhibition at the age of 57. By 1970 Vollmer began exploring complex geometrical forms and mathematical concepts, with a particular interest in platonic solids and spiralsโ€”as seen here in this drawing, ๐˜š๐˜ฑ๐˜ช๐˜ณ๐˜ข๐˜ญ ๐˜‹๐˜ณ๐˜ข๐˜ธ๐˜ช๐˜ฏ๐˜จ (1973), from the Tweedโ€™s collection.

Critic Roberta Smith wrote about Vollmerโ€™s work for ๐˜ˆ๐˜ณ๐˜ต๐˜ง๐˜ฐ๐˜ณ๐˜ถ๐˜ฎ in 1974: โ€œVollmerโ€™s art is concerned with the process of discovering and exploring the logic and the systems which underlie all forms, and when it succeeds, it involves us in that process of thought too, and in the continuing sense of flow and wonder which she experiences in her work.โ€

ยฉ The Jacob and Gwendolyn Lawrence Foundation, Seattle / Artists Rights Society (ARS), New York. This print is part of a portfolio issued to celebrate the American Bicentennial, in which leading American artists were asked to create works that spoke to their interpretation of independence.

Jacob Lawrence is best known for his work that depicts the African American experience. In the mid-1970s, Lawrence began making screenprints of subjects he had explored in painting throughout his career, including the sixty panels of his landmark (1941). Although the 14th Amendment to the Constitution (1868) granted citizenship to formerly enslaved Americans, and the 15th Amendment (1870) established a constitutional right to vote for African American men, states across the South and elsewhere in the US restricted the voting rights of Black citizens. In this print Lawrence portrays African Americans voting for the first time after migrating to the North starting in the 1920s.
