Window on the Plains Museum

Window on the Plains Museum Window on the Plains is a "big city" museum in a small town. We are preserving the past through history and art.

Window on the Plains Museum began in 1976 as Moore County Historical Museum. The facility was housed in the ballroom of a landmark hotel until 2001, when it was moved to its permanent home and became Window on the Plains Museum. In addition to extensive displays centered around farming and ranching, industry, business, family life and wildlife, the museum houses a research and archives center. The

museum also includes a walking trail that winds among outside exhibits of farming, ranching and industrial exhibits. The Art Center opened a new building in October of 2001 as a neighbor to Window on the Plains. The joining of the two has made Dumas a pleasant stop to view art and history and to enjoy the best of Texas.

This Memorial Day weekend, we honor and remember the men and women who made the ultimate sacrifice in service to our country.

We will be open on Monday (10am-5pm) — stop by our Military History section and take a moment to remember those who gave everything for our freedom. 🇺🇸

Most people don’t realize just how big our museum property is — we sit on 10 acres! Even though it’s cooler outside today, summer is a great time to visit and explore the walking trail (like this horned toad we spotted yesterday).

Step inside while you’re here and see what you’ve been missing!

He later served with Haltom City Fire Department. He is a paramedic and a Certified Master Peace Officer/arson investigator. He currently teaches at the Amarillo College Regional Fire Academy.

Stop by to meet Dr. Napp, hear about his experiences, and get your books signed. Copies of his books, Tales From The Ashes and Out Of The Ashes, will be available for purchase on Saturday.

Flashback Friday! In January 1933, a trio of robbers set their sights on First State Bank, located on the corner of Seventh and Bliss. Armed with an acetylene torch stolen from a local blacksmith shop, they attempted to break into the safe. They cut through the outer door, but despite their best efforts, they couldn't crack the inner vault door. What did they take? 31 safety deposit boxes...and the night watchman, Sam Hamilton! He was released a few hours later in Amarillo, and the robbers were caught after another robbery attempt in Tucumcari. Today the safe they tried (and failed) to crack sits proudly at our museum.

Interesting fact: this wasn't the only time Mr. Hamilton was kidnapped!

Visit us this weekend and learn about other local legends and the stories of Moore County.

Spotted outside the museum yesterday — one of our favorite locals!

Did you know:
- Horned toads are native to the American Southwest, including right here in the Texas Panhandle.
- Their coloring matches where they live (sandy, red, or even darker tones depending on the region).
- Horned toads mostly eat ants.
- Despite their tough look, they’re gentle and harmless to people. (But don’t touch! It can cause stress and disrupt their natural behavior.)

Come out to the museum this weekend! We’re open Monday–Saturday, 10am–5pm. Admission is always free!

11 years of Night at the Museum! We wrapped up this favorite event on Friday, welcoming 616 students, teachers, and volunteers over the course of several nights! Thank you to our amazing volunteers for bringing our exhibits to life. Thank you for giving up your evenings and for standing in the dark for hours (some in the cold barns). Thank you to the teachers for attending trainings and coordinating schedules to make this program possible. So many hours of preparation go into making Night at the Museum a success each year, and we simply could not do it without all of you. Thank you!
