Museum of Art - University of New Hampshire

Museum of Art - University of New Hampshire The Museum of Art is dedicated to service in two major areas: academic programs and community outreach.

The New Hampshire Seacoast's premier art museum -- a center for the visual arts where visitors gather to enjoy changing exhibitions, music, lectures, and receptions. As a teaching museum, it provides students at the University of New Hampshire with challenging opportunities to learn from works of art on a first-hand basis. In community outreach, the Museum of Art is a center for the visual arts, w

here members of the University community and visitors to the University can enjoy art exhibitions and programs of high quality and broad interest. The Museum of Art fulfills these roles by presenting an active schedule of changing exhibitions of art, educational programs (lectures, concerts, and gallery talks) for both the campus and off-campus communities, an outreach program (lending library and guided tours of exhibitions) geared toward K-12 teachers and school children, and the maintenance of a permanent art collection utilized for exhibitions, teaching, and research. The Museum of Art cares for a permanent collection of 1,700 works of art, including paintings, drawings, prints, photography, ceramics, and sculpture. The collection emphasizes nineteenth- and twentieth-century prints and drawings and includes nearly two hundred Japanese woodblock prints. Annual exhibitions feature works from the permanent collection.

Statement on the closure of the Museum of Art, from Kristina L. Durocher, Director:

Dear Friends, Faculty, Staff, and Students,

It is with heavy hearts that we share the news of the closure of the Museum of Art. As dedicated museum professionals and custodians of works of art held in the public trust, we have been honored to serve as the arts and cultural leader of the University System of New Hampshire, bringing exceptional art exhibitions and programs to all of you.

The University’s decision to close the museum was, I am told, a difficult one, brought on by declining enrollment, and it comes with a mix of emotions. Plans were underway to replace the Museum’s HVAC system in the spring of 2024, an investment that would have aided our efforts to seek accreditation by the American Alliance of Museums. Accreditation recognizes institutions that meet the highest standards and qualifications in our field, opening the door to private and public grants and assuring donors of the professionalism of the Museum to safeguard their loans and gifts of art. Because this construction project was scheduled to begin December 6, 2023, the announcement on January 16, 2024, to close the Museum of Art came as a shock. The University has faced numerous challenges in the past, and unfortunately, the timetable for the Museum of Art to weather current financial and operational constraints was too short and unpredictable for us to continue...

Giving Tuesday is approaching! If you're participating this year, please consider the Museum of Art in your giving plan.

Why does your contribution matter? This year, funds from donors like you have allowed us to exhibit internationally recognized artists. Your contributions enabled us to bring artist to campus for thoughtful programming and hands-on experiential learning for UNH students. Your gifts for strengthening our collection allowed us to acquire socially-conscious works from diverse artists. It's all thanks to your support!

Please consider giving to the Museum of Art on this Giving Tuesday, November 28.

We will be closed tomorrow, November 10, in observance of Veteran's Day. We will be open for our normal Saturday hours, 12:00 - 4:00, on Saturday, November 11.

If you haven't yet seen War Is Trauma, Saturday is the perfect time to visit exhibition. The prints on view are a conversation lead by the veteran's rights group, and Artists' Cooperative, on the complicated realities veterans face navigating post-service and post-combat life. We believe honoring veteran's experiences can take many forms on this day and we offer the prints in War Is Trauma as one dialogue. The exhibition is on view through December 2.

Did you know that we partnered with UNH Department of Nursing in the College of Health and Human Services for a pilot year program with all of our pre-clinical nursing students? During the Fall 2023 semester, sophmore nursing students will learn and practice visual art observation skills to enhance their work in clinical settings and patient care with works on view in the Museum of Art. 🚨THURSDAY! Art Lab! The artist Sue Coe uses raw graphic images, frequently based on her first-hand observations, to throw an uncompromising spotlight on societal inequalities lurking in the shadows of America. In this program, the Museum of Art invites two experts working at the intersection of storytelling, justice, and the politics of power in America to explore Coe’s work and the continued urgency of issues presented in Why No Justice?. 🔝Link in Bio to register!

Join us for a conversation between Marla Brettschneider, Professor of Political Science and Women's and Gender Studies at the University of N ew Hampshire, and Lauren Chooljian, senior reporter and producer at NHPR’s DOCUMENT team, a narrative-driven, long form reporting project.

We had a great group of students turnout for artist Sue Coe’s prinmaking demo last Friday! Students and faculty practiced the printing process using a linocut drawn and carved by Sue, which was made exclusively for the demo’s participants! Everyone was able to talk with Sue about her work and process of creating art informed by her firsthand observations and activism. A special thank you to Kate Knox, Professor in the Department of Art and Art History, for guiding everyone through the demo and letting us takeover her studio! Additional thank you to Ben Cariens, Chair of the Department of Art and Art History, all of the participants, and of course Sue Coe for providing us with the opportunity to work with her and make this happen!

Have you seen our new exhibition, War is Trauma?

War Is Trauma is portfolio of handmade prints created and co-organized by the Justseeds Artists' Cooperative and Iraq Veterans Against the War (IVAW) and their allies. The collaboration was born from a street poster project in November 2010, in which a number of Justseeds artists provided graphics for “Operation Recovery” – a campaign to stop the deployment of traumatized troops and win service members and veterans right to heal. Posters were pasted in public, replacing many corporate advertisements, to focus public attention towards the issues not being discussed – GI Resistance, Post Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD), sexual assault in the military or Military Sexual Trauma (MST), and Traumatic Brain Injury (TBI).

Select prints from the portfolio on view through December 2.
