𝗢𝗖𝗧𝗢𝗕𝗘𝗥 𝟭𝟵𝟭𝟴. 𝗧𝗛𝗘 𝗙𝗟𝗨 𝗥𝗘𝗔𝗖𝗛𝗘𝗗 𝗗𝗬𝗘𝗥 𝗖𝗢𝗨𝗡𝗧𝗬.

Within weeks, an epidemic that was sweeping across the world had made its way into our own communities.

Civic and medical leaders did what they could to slow its spread and care for the sick, but they had few tools to fight it. Dr. Matthew Stafford estimates that between 85 and 135 people may have died in Dyer County during the outbreak.

Then came November.

The epidemic began to loosen its grip. World War I ended. Celebration replaced fear, and those who had survived that terrible October went on with their lives.

But what actually happened here?

Join us TODAY at 5:00 PM as Dr. Matthew Stafford tells the story of The Spanish Flu in Dyer County, October 1918.

He'll explore how the pandemic began and spread, why it became so deadly, how it reached West Tennessee and Dyer County, how local civic and medical leaders responded, and what Dyer County residents endured.

The influenza pandemic of 1918 touched communities and families across the country, including right here in Dyer County. Dr. Stafford will explore the outbreak and what it meant for the people who called our county home more than a century ago.

The Annual meeting of the Historical Society will be held on Tuesday, June 9th at 5:00 at the Professional Development Center. The PDC is located at 305 College Street in Downtown Dyersburg.

The public is encouraged to attend. There will be an election for new board members. Those in attendance who are members in good standing will be able to cast their vote for 5 board positions. Individual memberships are $25 and those interested in supporting the work of the Society can join prior to the distribution of ballots.

In addition, there will be a tentative outline of historical society plans for the future.

The Dyer County Museum is located inside the PDC and will be open at 4:00 Tuesday.

If you haven't seen the museum or if you are interested in all aspects of local history, this is a meeting you will not want to miss.
