This week, we’ll be showcasing UNICORN ROOT, or Aletris farinosa!

This plant thrives in well-draining soils East of the Mississippi River. Growing up to 40 inches tall, these plants’ bright green stalks and white, tubular flowers make for a pretty sight!

Originally used by indigenous peoples of Eastern North America, unicorn root served as a valuable supplement for regulating menstrual cycles. It helped to alleviate cramping, while also addressing problems like infertility and anemia. Otherwise known as colic root, this plant was also used to treat excessive crying in infants.

The medicinal properties of this plant come from its root system—a network of interconnected rhizomes containing the steroid saponin. Wild-harvested unicorn root, like the sample in our collection (packaging shown below), came either in the form of a dried powder or loose-chopped roots.

First up in our collection of medicine is HOREHOUND, or Marrubium vulgare!

A bitter herb, horehound was often taken in the form as a candy or a tea sweetened with honey. Its medicinal uses date back as far as the 1st century B.C.E. In Rome. Traditionally it was used to relieve cold and flu symptoms, such as respiratory issues and decreased digestion. Today, you can find horehound used in herbal cough drops and specialty candies!

The horehound in our collection (packaging shown below) came in the form of loose, dried herb.
