Another Gardening Picture from Phil... Did you Know???
Parasitoid wasps, like the big black wasp we posted a photo of in the past, are awesome for the garden. BUT....This is a tomato hornworm, and they are no good!
But, braconid wasps eat the heck out them. The whole process is so gnarly!
- Egg laying: The tiny female wasp finds a hornworm and uses a sharp tube called an ovipositor to inject her eggs right under the caterpillar's skin, along with a virus that stops the pest's immune system from fighting back.
- Internal feeding: The eggs hatch into small larvae that eat the hornworm from the inside out while it continues to crawl around.
- Cocoon stage: When ready to grow into adults, the larvae chew their way out through the caterpillar's skin and spin those visible white, silken cocoons along its back.
- Emergence: Adult wasps hatch out of the cocoons to find and control more pests. Meanwhile, the doomed hornworm stops eating and dies!
Nature is so COOL!
