Chase's Mill in Mill Hollow

Chase's Mill in Mill Hollow Step back in time and explore Chase’s Mill, one of NH’s last operating water-powered mills.

Come see the power of water as it turns into mechanical and electrical energy, or attend one of our tours, classes, social events, lectures, and walking tours. The Mill Hollow Heritage Association (MHHA) operates Chase's Mill in Alstead, NH, as a workshop for hands-on learning and a community gathering space. Our water-powered mill embodies the history of small-town industry, celebrating New England's vibrant past and inspiring the future of sustainable power and rural technology.

This Saturday
Join us for a hands-on Hügelkultur workshop at Chase’s Mill
Sat May 30 | 10 AM–12 PM
With Ulia Sokol

Most garden beds dry out. Hügelkultur beds do the opposite.

By burying logs and organic material beneath the soil, these raised beds act like a natural reservoir—absorbing rainwater and slowly releasing it to plants when they need it most.

Over time, the wood breaks down, feeding the soil and improving fertility for years.

Have you ever tried a gardening method that improves every year?

“He who works with his hands is a laborer. He who works with his hands and his head is a craftsman. He who works with his hands, his head, and his heart is an artist.” — St. Francis of Assisi

At its core, craft is more than technique—it’s connection. When we shape wood, stitch fabric, mix pigments, or tend a garden, we begin with our hands. As we learn, problem-solve, and refine, we bring in our head. But it’s when we add heart—our stories, our care, our curiosity—that something truly meaningful takes form.

This is what it means to be Connecting through Craft. Not just making things, but making meaning. Sharing knowledge across generations. Turning individual creativity into a shared experience. And finding common ground in the act of creating together.

Whether you’re picking up a tool for the first time or returning to a lifelong practice, every project is an opportunity to connect—with the work, with others, and with something deeper within yourself.

Screen-free summer here we come!

Looking for a way to keep kids curious and engaged this summer?

Bring them to Chase’s Mill and experience history in motion—right in a place that bore witness to the Revolutionary War, the founding of the United States, and everything that followed. Tours every weekend, 10–12.

As we mark America’s 250th, this is a chance to bring that history to life in a way kids can see, hear, and explore.
Watch water power at work
See how people built and created
Ask questions and discover how life once looked

This isn’t just something to read about—it’s something to experience.

Recommended for ages 8+. Younger children are welcome with a dedicated 1:1 adult-to-child ratio, as this is a working mill.

This summer at Chase’s Mill, we invite you to explore a simple but powerful idea: Connecting through Craft.

Since 1767, Chase’s Mill has been a place of work, learning, and connection.
This summer at Chase’s Mill, we’re exploring how making, building, and creating bring us together. As we mark America’s 250th anniversary, we’ll be weaving that history into our summer—connecting past to present through the crafts and practices that shaped everyday life. The story continues with you.

Because the story of this place isn’t just something we preserve. It’s something we continue—together.

What will you create, learn, or discover this season?

Saturday, April 25, 9am - 12pm

Volunteer opportunity! Help ready Chase’s Mill for the new season of tours, classes, and projects, and reconnect in person with the mill community. We have a variety of tasks to suit every person, from sweeping and vacuuming to unpacking boxes, washing windows, and refreshing the bulletin board. It will be a joy to spend time together at the mill after a snowy, cold winter.
Join us for all or part of the morning.
