Dhu Nuwas didn't give them a choice. He dug an enormous U-shaped trench (the 'Nawas' canal) and filled it with blazing, unquenchable fire. His ultimatum was simple: Renounce your faith and kneel to his gods, or jump.

Legend says 20,000 men, women, and children chose the flames over forced conversion. This single act of profound defiance created an international outrage.

The Fallout:
This wasn’t just a tragedy; it was a political earthquake. Outraged by the massacre, the Christian superpower Aksum (modern Ethiopia) launched a full-scale invasion of Yemen, ending Dhu Nuwas's reign and starting a new era of foreign influence.
