The Varnum House Museum was proud to host numerous family tours on Memorial Day. Perhaps it was a bad day for a parade, but it was perfect for a museum visit! We were busy all day! We appreciated the great engagement with the kids who learned about 18th-century life, the Revolutionary War, and the accomplishments of General James Mitchell Varnum.

Afterwards, they also enjoyed visiting our Historic Preservation Gardens (once the weather improved...) to see the East Greenwich Liberty Tree; our pollinator garden; the herb, dye, and medicine garden; and our Three Sisters Garden. Seeing Eldredge's 4th graders explore our rooms and exhibits at the Varnum House Museum reminds us why historic preservation matters. When students step inside a place where history happened, the past becomes real. Every school tour, educational program, and community event connects us to Rhode Island’s rich history, but preserving these spaces takes community support. If you believe local history should be protected, consider supporting the Varnum House Museum with a donation.

The Varnum House Museum was thrilled to host all four 4th-grade classes from Eldredge Elementary School! It was a hot day, but the students stayed fully engaged and asked a lot of questions. The Varnum House volunteers are always thrilled to pass on town, state, and U.S. history to young people during the entire year.

This year, the Varnum House offered a new twist to this elementary school field trip. Our Historic Preservation Gardens were open for student tours! The Eldredge students learned about pollinator gardens, indigenous Three Sisters gardens, and heritage herb, dye, and medicine gardens.

Do you want to support our ability to bring in more young students to the Varnum House Museum and the Historic Preservation Gardens? We encourage you to make a donation today! Just follow this link to start donating!

Our big Saturday didn't end with the Rhode Island 250 Liberty Tree Ceremony at East Greenwich Town Hall (Town of East Greenwich RI)! After that, Troop 2 East Greenwich planted the corn in our Three Sisters Garden at the Varnum House Museum. We were even graced with a cameo by The Ladies of the Greene!
