Artist Statement:
Throughout my education and career as an art teacher, I have experimented with a variety of media, but have always been drawn back to clay. Clay gives me the freedom to create with multiple techniques and play with the combination of functional and sculptural forms. When I look at a piece of my artwork, it reminds of another time in my life. It is important for me to document the

se times as a way of speaking to the world and making myself heard. When others view my art, my hope is that they will be reminded of their own experiences and form a personal connection with the work. As a teacher, I hope to inspire students to create and express their own thoughts and experiences in their artwork. I believe art education should incorporate connections to culture, history, and life, and give students the opportunity to make choices and express personal ideas within their work. When students are invested in their work, they develop a greater appreciation for the process of creating art. Being an art teacher and a practicing artist is a constant cycle; I have the opportunity to motivate students to create personal artwork, and I, in turn, become inspired by their imaginations and creativity.
