Frank Frazetta Vampirella #5 Cover Painting "Cornered" Original Art (Warren Publishing, 1970). With their raw physical power and formidable weapons, Frank Frazetta's warriors are not the kind of opponents you would want to meet on the battlefield -- even if you happen to be a fearsome T-Rex. This savage scene, from a peak period, is Frazetta's renowned masterwork, "Cornered," which was only his second cover ever to appear on the Vampirella title. Frazetta was a revolutionary artist, and in his May 10, 2010 obituary, The New York Times noted, "Frazetta helped define comic book and fantasy heroes like Conan, Tarzan, and John Carter of Mars. His signature images were of strikingly fierce, hard-bodied heroes and bo**my, callipygian damsels." Frazetta took the s*x and violence of the pulp fiction of his youth and added even more action, fantasy, and potency, but he also rendered his works with a masterful painting technique seldom seen outside of Fine Art. This is an oil on masonite chiller. Measures approximately 16" x 24".

Vampirella v1 #5, 1970 - A stone age couple brace themselves from a dinosaur poised to attack. Inside, Jeff Jones' first story art on the series is admirable for an early work. His graphic approach works well in a horror tale with sparse dialogue. Some panels could have benefited from more details, but the minimal title splash is powerfully claustrophobic. Other artists in this Warren bronze age horror magazine include Tom Sutton and Mike Royer. This number 2 of 5 Vampirella issues with Frazetta art and/or covers and number 2 of 8 Vampirella issues with Jones art and/or covers (not including reprints).

Mothman
Artwork by Frank Frazetta circa 1980
Featured on paperback cover of "The Mothman Prophecies" by John A. Keel & magazine cover of "High Times" 1980

A classic true story of modern horror...
This is the extremely rare 4th revised Illuminet Press edition, from 1992, which adds an Afterword by Keel that did not appear in the original 1975 edition.
For thirteen months, the town of Point Pleasant, West Virginia is gripped by a dark terror that culminated in a tragedy that made headlines around the world.
This is a story that contains all the elements of a modern science-fiction movie, except that every word is true, and fully documented by famed journalist John A. Keel.
Homes throughout the little town were plagued with unearthly noises and ghostly manifestations, while mysterious aerial lights traveled silently overhead - seemingly on a regular schedule.
Winged monsters and frightening apparitions terrified the population, as automobiles stalled and telephones and television sets ran amok.
A Red Cross bloodmobile filled with fresh blood was pursued along a darkened highway by a weird flying machine. Domestic animals were found slaughtered and mutilated in pastoral farm fields. Innocent people live in surrealistic horror, haunted by the fearsome "Bird," and besieged by legions of strange beings (some of whom arrived in black suits and black automobiles).
John A. Keel, world-traveler and noted Fortean investigator, spent over a year in Point Pleasant, where he saw and experienced many of the strange manifestations personally.
The Mothman Prophecies has been translated and published in fourteen languages, and is regarded as a major classic in the annals of modern parapsychology. It is guaranteed to shake your beliefs and concepts about reality. It will open your mind to things you never dared think about before. And it will scare the hell out of you

Cover Dark Crusade by Karl Edward Wagner

Aware of Lancer's phenomenal sales figures for the Conan series and Ace's success with the ERB reprints, Warner Books commissioned Frazetta to provide the cover for the "Kane" books by Karl Edward Wagner.

Essentially a fantasy interpretation of the Biblical "Cain," Wagner's dour and depressing novels about an immortal and amoral anti-hero were perfectly suited to the cynicism of the post-Watergate 1970's.

Before his ultimely death in 1994 Karl Wagner was considered by many to have been the logical successor to Robert E Howard (and interestingly, he had written one of the best Howard pastiche, King's of the Night, a Bran Mak Morn novel for Zebra Books). His fiction was well-crafted and original. His use of modern vernacular instead of mimicked medieval speech was refreshing and was perhaps an inspiration for the popular Hercules: The Legendary Journeys TV series.

Frazetta's cover for Dark Crusade is appropriately somber and grim, simultaneously heroic and unsettling and it prefigures his later "Death Dealer" series. The painting is an excellent visual metaphor for Wagner's character, portraying Kane's descen from light and reason into darkness, horror, and dread.

Downward to the f6b03ee42 soupy, abstract to the point of barely being there," Frank observes. "But the boldness of the color and the looser technique actually stops you faster than if I had gone in and carefully rendered everything in minute detail." The Society of Illustrators presented Frazetta with their Award of Excellence for this cover, one of two he was to receive from the organization.

"Conan the Advenger" AKA "Sacrifice"
By Robert E Howard
Artwork by Frank Frazetta circa 1968

"Peace had reigned in Aquilonia, but when his beloved Queen Zenobia is stolen before his very eyes, Conan, the great barbarian king, cannot rest until he saves her. And so the most stupendous hero of fantasy-adventure returns to the battlefield, matching his savage strength against the most monstrous forces of evil and doom."

"I tried to appeal to the masses and at the same time inject little subtleties that would appeal to the intellectuals around. They did see past the obvious. If you look at the background, that’s what makes my work go on and on. Many people, even the fans, don’t realize why they keep enjoying it. It’s like abstract music, you don’t quite understand but because it’s so varied you keep enjoying it and you never get tired of it. There’s a lot going on in my art besides the superhero standing there doing his thing. It’s the way I lead into it, the way I move you around, not just a heroic figure looking wonderful. At least that’s the way I like think about it. I like to compare myself to Stravinsky. When he wrote The Rite Of Spring he went out in left field and people said, “What the hell is that?” To this day, I’ve never tired of that piece."

Film producer Dino De Laurentiis actively tried to persuade Frazetta to work for him throughout the 1970's. Though he turned down the poster commission for the remake of King Kong, Frank finally relented and agreed to provide a painting for Orca starring Richard Harris, Charlotte Rambling and Bo Derek. "It was always real strange with Dino," Frazetta says. "He was always very friendly, very polite. He'd chase after me and try to get me to do art, but then always turned a deaf ear to my suggestions. I was pretty pleased with the concept I delivered for his whale movie, but he immediately wanted something completely different. Either you want me or you don't, pal, so I walked." As with king Kong, John Berkey was commissioned to paint the movie poster. De Laurentiis would end up being sued by the producers of Jaws and though the case was eventually settled virtually everyone involved with the production of Orca was bogged down in a nightmare of litigation for several years.

When people see the Lord of the Rings portfolio pieces that Frazetta did, they often ask why he did them-- and why they weren't more widely published. Many fans lament that Frazetta and Tolkien never officially worked together; one as the master of fantasy art and the other as the master of fantasy writing. Unfortunately for fans of both, it just wasn't meant to be.

However, in the 1970s, a publisher based in Denver, Colorado commissioned Frazetta to create a portfolio of work inspired by Tolkien's three main Lord of the Rings books. However, the pieces "inadvertently ignited a firestorm of criticism from the legion of [Lord of the] Rings fans who took issue with Frank's liberal interpretation of the story. Accustomed to his versions of fantasy characters becoming definitive, he was somewhat mystified by the controversy surrounding the folio. 'Wow, I thought the Burroughs fans were particular,' Frazetta muses, 'but the Tolkien fans were REALLY picky.' (Fenner, 2001)
-Excerpt from the book, "Testament".

Still, though he may have not worked directly on anything official for the Lord of the Rings, he influenced many involved in the movies including director Peter Jackson and the creative company behind the phenomenal special effects and props, Weta Workshop.

"My artwork doesn't say an awful lot," Frazetta says. "The paintings are theatrical, melodramatic, even corny-but still beautiful. There are contrasts, there's menace, a lot of movement, but no real honest-to-god heavy message. What do they really represent? Nothing more than a very emotional interpretation of a particular concept."

"Solar Invasion"
Written by Manley Wade Wellman
Artwork by Frank Frazetta circa 1968

Frank Frazetta The Solar Invasion Paperback Cover Original Art (Popular Library, 1968).
Manley Wade Wellman's pulp hero Captain Future is ready for cosmic adventure in an eye-popping cover painting by Frank Frazetta. This classic fantasy painting from the master's peak period is one of the finest examples we have ever offered, boldly incorporating all the elements collectors could hope for in a published Frazetta cover: a ruggedly handsome hero with weapon drawn, flanked by not one but two beautiful Frazetta girls, all framed within a masterfully dramatic composition. As Frazetta expert "Doc" Dave Winiewicz tells us, "Frank thought it was the most ambitious and most successful of all his early sci-fi compositions and was particularly happy about the girls. He thought they had a special s*xy quality about them. Frank also was pleased with the color blending in the background -- he was disappointed that the published paperback washed out the intensity of the colors. I remember Frank explaining to me how the foreground snake creature, the mid-ground characters, and the colorful background all worked well to present a nice three dimensional presentation. Everything 'stood out' that was supposed to stand out. Frank said: 'I always want your eyes to go where I want them to go. If I can do that, then it's a success.'"

This oil on canvas painting measures approximately 17.5" x 23.5", and has been attractively matted and framed, without glass, for an overall size of 25" x 31". It was given a light protective coating of clear varnish, and is in Excellent condition. This magnificent painting has remained out of the public eye, stashed away in the same private collection since the 1970s -- the very definition of a fresh-to-the-market masterpiece by the greatest fantasy artist of all time! Sold at Auction for:: $262,900.00
