We are deeply saddened by the passing of Melvin Edwards (1937-2026).

“His art was monumental yet inviting—powerful without ever feeling heavy-handed. He was open, thoughtful, and deeply understanding—the true mark of a teacher and mentor. Our collaboration began in 2006 in my print studio, where we created over twenty unique editions together. Many were experimental and large in scale, much like Mel himself.
Even when we weren’t working side by side, we stayed connected—phone calls just to check in, to share, to remain present in each other’s lives. Our work expanded beyond printmaking into sculpture, including "Transcendence" at Lafayette College and David’s Dream at the David C. Driskell Center.

Mel will be deeply missed—for his honesty, his creative generosity, and most of all, his devotion to friendship that reached across the world.”

—C.R. Holton (one of those friends)

Staff Pick for

"Fall" (2014) by Alison Saar.

Saar is a sculptor, mixed-media, and installation artist based in Los Angelos. Saar’s parents, her mother an acclaimed collagist and her father a painter and art conservator, nurtured Saar’s interest in art. Assisting in her father’s restoration shop inspired her curiosity about art, other cultures, and spiritual traditions.

Saar’s creative style incorporates found objects such as rough-hewn wood, old tin ceiling panels, nails, shards of pottery, glass, and urban detritus. The resulting figures and shapes explore issues of gender, race, heritage, history, and race. Her artwork is influenced by African, Caribbean, and Latin American folk art, myth, and spirituality and focuses on the African diaspora and Black female identity.
