Tides Institute & Museum of Art

Tides Institute & Museum of Art 43 Water Street, Eastport, Maine 04631 USA TIMA's collections represent the largest and most significant cultural collections along the eastern coast of Maine.

Founded in 2002 in Eastport Maine, the Tides Institute & Museum of Art is located on the Atlantic coast at the US/Canada border. This boundary location shapes its perspective on the region and the broader world: through its initiatives and programs to foster new innovative and cross-sector works; through its wide ranging collections, education and preservation efforts; and through its partnerships

and endeavors to strengthen the region’s economic prosperity, vitality and wider connections. From historical to contemporary, from the 18th century to today, the collections have a particular focus on art, broadly conceived, but also have strong interests with architecture and history. The focuses of the collections are on the U.S./Canada northeast coast with connections to the broader world. TIMA's StudioWorks Artist-in-Residence Program is now in its ninth year. Facilities include an 1887 downtown StudioWorks space, an 1819 North Church Project Space plus two historic buildings for artist housing. Since 2013, 62 artists from 18 different states and four foreign countries have participated in the program. The Tides Institute & Museum of Art (TIMA) campus is made up of eight 19th century repurposed historic buildings as well as additional properties owned by TIMA. These buildings, dating from 1819 to the end of the 19th century, preserve and reflect the region’s architectural heritage while repurposing them with 21st century activities and resources. Four of TIMA’s buildings are listed on the National Register of Historic Places (including three that were designed by the same architect and built at the same time), six (including the four on the National Register) are part of Eastport’s local historic district, and two other TIMA buildings are located nearby in an adjacent historic residential area.

Posted photo shows Kristin McKinlay, assistant director, and Honor Wilkinson, consulting curator, hanging a contemporary painting by Charlotte "Baychar" Morris (1949-2024). To the left of the painting is a large crazy quilt by Sarah Preble Livermore (1867-1961) that dates to 1894. Open hours during June are 10 am to 4 pm, Wednesday through Saturday.

A TEST FOR THE NORTH CHURCH! The community chorus group, Quoddy Voices, asked us last fall about using our 1819 North Church building in Eastport, Maine as one of the venues for their spring series of performances in this region. We were happy to say yes, feeling that it would be a good test for the space and its remarkable acoustics aided by its 23 foot high vaulted ceiling. This past Sunday the Quoddy Voices performance took place in the building with upwards of 35 singers, by far the most singers we have ever had in the space. By all accounts we heard, the acoustics came through in spades and the performance was a great success. Thanks to Quoddy Voices for giving this very historic space a contemporary test.

NEW PHOTOGRAPH BOOK IN THE WORKS! For the past year and a half we have been working to produce a new photograph book that will feature about 100 photographs from a collection of over 500 mid to late 19th century glass plate negatives of this region - from Lubec and Pembroke to Eastport and Sipayik, from St. Andrews to Campobello and Grand Manan. We have been working on the project with the family of photographer, Charles E. Brown (who took the vast majority of the photographs along with his photographer father in law, Davis Loring), and Earle Shettleworth, Jr., Maine State Historian and long time director (now retired) of the Maine Historic Preservation Commission. Earle is an authority on the history of photography in Maine and he considers this collection of glass plate negatives to be one of the most important in Maine. He has made the selection of photographs for the book and is writing an essay on the photographers. Posted here is one of the selected photographs showing the seining of herring inside a weir in this region in about 1890. By end of today we will have completed the high resolution scanning of the selected glass plate negatives. Andrew Steeves of the Press of the Varying Hare in Black River Lake, Nova Scotia, will design the book. We expect the book to be published by the end of next year and we will keep you posted on its progress. We'll have more to say about the collection of glass plate negatives in the near future.

WOMEN ARTISTS EXHIBITION OPENS NEXT WEDNESDAY, JUNE 3RD! We've got our first exhibition of the season opening next Wednesday, June 3rd. Guest curated by Honor Wilkinson, the exhibition features a selection of works chosen from the more than 100 original works by women artists that have come into our collections in the past five years or so. Posted here is a large photograph by photographer, Susan Lapides, that will be part of the exhibition. It was a gift to the Tides Institute by the photographer. Titled "Setting Day" it shows the start of the fall lobstering season in Back Bay (St. George), New Brunswick in 2021. These original works range in date from the 1840s to today and range in medium from painting to sculpture, from basketry to photography. Open hours during June are 10 am to 4 pm, Wednesday through Saturday and during July, 10 am to 4 pm, Tuesday through Sunday. A reception for the exhibition will be held on Friday, June 26, 5-7 pm. We'll post additional images of works from the exhibition in the weeks ahead and the entire exhibition will be online next week.

EARLY MORNING! Early morning view of New Brunswick islands just before sunrise two days ago. View is from the end of the "fish pier" across the street from our StudioWorks building in downtown Eastport, Maine. Islands left to right in the photo are Indian, Thumcap, Cherry (with automated navigational light showing) and Campobello. Our StudioWorks artist-in-residence program resumes this weekend with the arrival of two artists who are both alumni of the program — Nancy Cohen (nancymcohen.com/) of Jersey City, New Jersey and Hannah O’Hare Bennett (www.hannahoharebennett.com/) of Madison, Wisconsin. They'll both be in residence from May 31st through June 26th. We look forward to welcoming them back.

GRAND MANAN! TWO MORE STARKWEATHER PAINTINGS ARRIVE! Two more oil paintings of this region and into the Maritime Provinces of Canada by New York City based artist, William Starkweather (1879-1969), arrived late last weeks for our collections. They date to the 1920s and 1930s. Posted image is of an oil on board painting titled, "Grand Manan, 1922." The oil paintings were a gift from a long time supporter of ours who now lives in Texas. They join 15 other works by Starkweather of this region and into the Maritime Provinces that the donor has given us over the past seven years. We have two additional works by Starkweather that came into our collections earlier making a total of 19 works by Starkweather now in our collections. The donor has promised us several more paintings by Starkweather in the future.

ARCHITECTURAL SKETCHBOOKS ARE HERE! We've received several boxes of copies of the new hardcover book, Eastport: An Architectural Sketchbook, that we've published. Illustrated and written by Sophie McIlwaine, the 52 page book features 44 of her drawings and watercolors of the architecture of Eastport, Maine with a focus on downtown buildings. Posted here are the cover and a couple of her sketches. Sophie was an artist-in-residence in our StudioWorks program in June of last year and the sketches were completed during her time here. Copies of the book can be ordered online (https://tidesinstitute.app.neoncrm.com/np/clients/tidesinstitute/product.jsp?product=45&) or purchased at our main building. Our regular open hours begin June 3.

MODEL OF CLIPPER SHIP, GREAT REPUBLIC! We recently had a superb model of the clipper ship, the Great Republic, come into our collections. It was a gift from the estate of the late Kenneth Wilbur Ross (1937 - 2024) of Red Beach, Maine. The original full size Great Republic was the largest wooden merchant sailing vessel ever built when it was launched at a Boston shipyard in 1853. It was designed by the legendary ship designer and builder, Donald McKay, who was born in Nova Scotia. The Great Republic was lost when it was abandoned in 1872. We think the model dates to about 1900 based on a card that was found inside the model case and also based on the construction techniques employed in both the model and the case.
