It's been an honor to host "Voices and Votes: Democracy in America", a Smithsonian Museum on Main Street traveling exhibition, on it's first stop of the Georgia tour. Thank you to Georgia Humanities, Old School History Museum, and all our community partners in making this incredible opportunity a reality for Putnam County and surrounding areas.

Today's Feature Friday is Raymond Andrews! Born in 1934 in Plainview, a rural community near Madison, Georgia, Andrews Andrews breathed life into vibrant, unforgettable characters rooted in the Georgia Piedmont. His rich narratives drew heavily from the oral traditions of his childhood, capturing the humor, hardships, and resilience of his community. Tragically, facing declining health and severe depression, Andrews took his own life on November 25, 1991, at the age of 57. He was posthumously awarded the American Book Award in 1992, and inducted into the Georgia Writers Hall of Fame in 2009.

Melissa Fay Greene is this week's Feature Friday! Greene, a journalist and nonfiction author, was inducted into the Georgia Writers Hall of Fame in 2011. In her first book, Praying for Sheetrock (1991), she chronicled the belated civil rights struggle in rural McIntosh County, Georgia. In her second book, The Temple Bombing (1996), she explored the 1958 white supremacist attack on an Atlanta synagogue, mapping the intersection of anti-Semitism and racism with a storyteller’s grace.

Greene says of her work, “I have tried to combine serious and honorable journalistic and historical research with love of language; to create works of literary richness, pleasing to the senses, gripping to the intellect, yet reliable and true.”.
