Before paved roads became the norm, sprinkler trucks often kept down the dust on dirt roads! This photograph, taken around 1897, shows the Long Branch and Asbury Park Boulevard Pumping Station and one of the horse-drawn sprinkler tanks. The firm of M. C. Burns was awarded the contract in July of that year to lay 1,750 feet of iron pipe to supply water for the sprinkle wagons. Although horse-drawn wagons and carriages certainly kicked up their share of dust during dry spells, it was the introduction of the automobile that made such solutions necessary. A fast-moving car, driving at the breathtaking speed of ten or even fifteen miles an hour, could leave behind a choking cloud of fine dust. These trucks were the answer, lightly dampening the top layers of dirt to keep down the dust clouds. By 1903, however, shore area roads were beginning to be paved over, eventually ending the need for the sprinkler wagons.
