Imported Treasures: “Fine Italian Renaissance Madrigals. Composed By Immigrants.”
Madrigals — polyphonic secular songs written for as few as two voices, and as many as ten or more — originated in Italy during the Renaissance. Though often regarded as the most quintessential of Italian music from the period, many of the influential madrigal composers in the early days of the genre turned out to be visitors or immigrants.
The musical selections on this concert celebrate these imported contributions. While the first set highlights the personal relationship between the composers, the rest of the program is organized by the subject matter of the poetry.
Schola Cantorum of Eau Claire is a 12-voice chamber ensemble in the Eau Claire and Chippewa Valley area dedicated to the historically informed performance of a ca****la vocal music of the medieval, renaissance, and baroque.
