Memorial Day was created after the American Civil War to honor soldiers who died in military service. Originally called “Decoration Day,” people gathered to decorate the graves of fallen Union soldiers with flowers, flags, and prayers.

Edna, Ks was the home of veteran and Medal of Honor recipient Samuel Triplett. The museum is honored to have a display honoring this hero. Stop by to see and read about Mr. Triplett.

Samuel S. Triplett (December 18, 1869 – August 26, 1957) was a United States Navy sailor who received the Medal of Honor for heroism during the Spanish–American War. He was born in Cherokee, Kansas, and later buried in Edna, Kansas.

He served aboard the USS Marblehead and earned the Medal of Honor for participating in the dangerous mission of clearing contact mines in Guantanamo Bay, Cuba, on July 26–27, 1898. The official citation states:

“Displaying heroism, Triplett took part in the perilous work of sweeping for and disabling 27 contact mines during this period.”

After the war, Triplett continued his Navy career and eventually reached the rank of Chief Boatswain’s Mate (some sources list Chief Gunner). He later became active in veterans organizations including the American Legion and Veterans of Foreign Wars.

He is buried at Elm Grove/North Edna Cemetery in Edna, Kansas.
