Join this beginner and family-friendly class designed to help with flexibility, strength, balance, as well as improve mental health. Join us for an adobe-making workshop led by Ome Tekuani Tlaloc! During this two-hour workshop, participants will learn more the history of adobe and its use in our region. They will also have the opportunity to create their own mini-casitas using pre-made adobe bricks. Adobe is traditional construction material made using clay, water, sand, and grass or straw. Its documented use in construction dates back centuries in the Southwest and was commonly used in El Paso for buildings until the late 1800s. As a construction material, adobe is extremely durable and energy efficient, providing heat resistance during hot summers. In last few decades, there has been a renewed interest in utilizing adobe for modern construction due to it being a renewable resource with low environmental impact. By end of the session, participants can expect to know more about best practices, local history, Indigenous knowledge, and sustainability.

About the Instructor
Ome Tekuani Tlaloc is a Chicano artist and culture bearer from Little Red Sands in El Paso, TX. His work focuses on honoring and understanding the relationship between people and plants in our desert region. In addition to his work returning adobe techniques to the Paso del Norte area, his practice includes traditional basketry, stonework, jewelry, and herbal remedies. Ome’s knowledge of adobe was passed down to him from his grandparents, who were raised in family-built adobe homes.

Maya-Inspired Pottery Workshop: Vessels

Join the El Paso Museum of History for a ceramics workshop with Johnny Galindo (Barro de Fuego) based in traditional, pre-colonization techniques. During this two-session workshop, participants will learn more about the history of Maya pottery and specific aesthetic techniques as well as how to create their own pieces inspired by these traditions. Participants will learn traditional hand-building methods (pinch, coil, slab) for pottery that can be utilized to create pieces without the assistance of a pottery wheel. The sessions will also cover decorative techniques used in traditional Maya pottery like appliqué, modeling, incising, and carving. Participants will also be able to optionally add color with slip painting for contrast.

After the second workshop, pieces will be fired available for pick-up at the El Paso Museum of History.

All supplies provided.

About the Instructor
Johnny Galindo is a ceramic artist and founder of Barro de Fuego, a studio practice rooted in Contemporary, pre-Columbian, and Maya aesthetics. He holds a BFA in Ceramics, Painting and a minor in Sculpture (2021). He works across functional pottery, sculptural ceramics, and private commissions. His work draws on Maya hand-building traditions — coil and slab construction, painting, incising, and burnishing — to create pieces that bridge historical technique with contemporary studio practice.

Pe**te Stitch Bandana Slide Workshop

Join us for a one-day workshop with Cindy Gutierrez-Krapp (Aghaa' Hat Co.) where participants will learn the Tubular Pe**te Stitch (also known as Gourd Stitch), an off-loom beading technique. Guests will learn to bead in-the-round on a copper piece, alternating colors in the design and work one bead at a time. Tubular Pe**te stitch is a technique used to embellish the ends of feathers, handles and jewelry. The finished product will be ready to take home at the end of the workshop and can be used as additional decor for bandanas. Light refreshments and all supplies provided.

The El Paso Museum of History would like to thank all those who attended the closing events for Escaramuza, The Poetics of Home.

A special thank you to Dr. David Romo for collaborating with us in the Mexican Revolution Streetcar Tour. To poets ire’ne lara silva and Maria Miranda Maloney thank you for taking the time to meet with El Pasoans who have their own story to tell.

We are also eternally grateful to the Castro Family for allowing us into their home. This event not only highlighted the tradition of escaramuza and charreria but also helped support educational programming and conservation efforts at the El Paso Museum of History.
