We keep coming back to the same thing: these men didn't know it was going to work.

The barnstormers who flew county fairs in the 1920s weren't certain they'd land safely. The mail pilots who crossed the Rockies at night in open-cockpit biplanes weren't following established routes: they were making them. The designers who drew new aircraft by hand in small Midwest factories weren't guaranteed a market or a customer.

They did it anyway. And what they built: the aircraft, the routes, the industry, the culture. It is the foundation of every flight that happens today.

That's what we're preserving in Hangar 3. That spirit. That willingness to go first.
We think the world still needs more of it.

In the 1930s, a private pilot in America had options that would make a modern aviator's jaw drop.

Open-cockpit biplanes with radial engines. Enclosed touring aircraft with leather seats. Side-by-side two-seaters that cruised at 120 mph on 75 horsepower. Fabric, wood, steel tube โ€” hand-built by craftsmen in small factories across the Midwest.

These weren't museum pieces. They were what you flew on a Saturday morning to visit a friend two states away. They were what flying clubs bought. What flying schools used to train new pilots.

Many of those aircraft are gone. A handful survive. The best of what survived is in Hangar 3 at Mustang Field.

If you've spent time around antique aircraft, you know about FAA Form 337. It's the document required every time a major alteration or repair is made to an aircraft: like the change of engine, a structural repair, a modification to the airframe.

For us, FAA Form 337s are primary historical sources.

They tell us when the original Wright J-5 Whirlwind was pulled out of our Stearman and replaced with a Lycoming R-680 in July 1946. They tell us when the Saunders-era metal wings were installed on our Ryan SCW. They tell us the exact date the engine was removed, the mechanic who did the work, and the airframe hours at the time.

Every alteration is a chapter in the aircraft's biography. We read them all.

Reassembly has begun on the 1938 Ryan SCW!

After some heavy lifting and traveling over 4,000 miles from Melbourne, Australia in a shipping container this legend got to fully stretch its wings.

Keep following along to see the Ryan reach the sky again this summer!

Al Mooney's name appears on two aircraft in our collection.

He designed the Eaglerock Long Wing for Alexander Aircraft at age 19. He designed the Culver Cadet LCA โ€” and personally signed the conformity documents for Serial 117 in 1940. And Mooney Aircraft Corporation, which he founded in 1946, still bears his name today.

He was self-taught. He was relentlessly inventive. And he left fingerprints on American general aviation that are still visible eight decades later.
When you stand in front of our Eaglerock or our Culver Cadet, you're looking at the work of one of the most important designers in the history of this country's aviation industry. We think he deserves to be remembered.
