Eldon Forum, May 6, 1920--LIBERTY SCHOOL PICNIC SATURDAY. Past School Year Considered Successful From Every Viewpoint.
The annual school picnic of Liberty School, a pleasant trip was held Saturday, May the 1st. The crowd, about fifty in all, gathered about 11 o'clock, and soon a sumptuous dinner was spread. Anyone seeing the bountiful tables would never have dreamed that sugar is 35 cents a pound and potatoes, six dollars a bushel. Yet, at the same time, there was profiteering going on as each one tried to see who could consume the most eats. After dinner a splendid program was given by which they made us know that spring was really coming and that the powerful sun can surely make a beautiful flower garden. The remainder of the day was spent in a social way and it made us all think of our own by-gone school days when we were a couple of kids together. We consider the past school year one of the very best, most profitable and exceedingly pleasant to all concerned, due mostly to the teacher, Miss Anna Strickland, helped greatly by the pupils and patrons. The attendance of the year was extra good, some coming two miles through the storms and over muddy roads. One, Clarance Stewart, was neither absent nor tardy the entire year. How the parents ought to sacrifice to allow their children to go to school and get an education when they are willing, under such conditions, to go. Demonstrations of the work of the year was shown, both in the program and on the walls of the school room. All about you were the maps, compositions, drawings, clay modeling, etc. Let us give due honor to the good country school teachers while they are with us, for they are not to be here always--an improved method is fast taking the place of the little cherished school house. May next year bring us all together again, each one a little older and a little wiser.

Eldon Forum, 1981--5TH GRADE FIRST PLACE ESSAY by Jody Webb. What Memorial Day Means to Me.
Memorial Day means when each year every state in the union sets aside a day to commemorate the services of the soldiers and sailors in the Civil War and since 1898 of those in the Spanish American War, World Wars I and II, Korean War and Viet Nam. The custom arose from the practice in the South of decorating the graves for the Confederate dead. Memorial Day means to me when my family picks flowers and places them on friends and relatives graves that died in the wars. It is when we give thanks to all the soldiers and sailors who gave their lives for our country. If it wasn't for them, we wouldn't have a home now.

Congratulations to the class of 2026!
This 1928 article from the Ottumwa Courier tells how they celebrated graduation nearly 100 years ago.
Eldon High to Graduate Fifty Seniors.--With baccalaureate services Sunday, May 27, the commencement activities of Eldon High School will be launched and a program occupying six days during that week will be given. The baccalaureate sermon will be preached by the Rev. L. R. Putnam, pastor of the Christian church, in the auditorium of the Methodist Episcopal church at 8 o'clock. Monday, May 28, will be senior class day and Tuesday, the class play, "A Full House", will be given in the opera house at 8 p.m. Commencement exercises will be held in the opera house the following evening at 8 o'clock. The speaker for this event has not been named because of the unexpected illness of the man formerly engaged. Thursday, May 30, the children of the grade schools will present a May fete on the high school grounds, beginning at 2:30. The alumni banquet will be held in the Masonic hall Friday, June 1. The class this year has fifty members, the largest in the history of the local high school.
(Perhaps these students were coifed and clothed similar to the 1928 graduates in this unidentified photo)

Hope you all enjoy this Mother's Day weekend. The Eldon Forum chronicled the 1974 Mother's Day banquet held at the Eldon Christian Church in this shortened article:
"The annual Mother-Daughter Banquet was held Thursday night at the Eldon Christian Church. The men of the church served a menu of salad, meat loaf, scalloped potatoes, green beans, hot rolls, coffee and cake to approximately 120 guests. One waiter was heard to comment, "I just don't understand why the women flinch when we stand behind them with full plates of food. You'd think they didn't trust us or something." Even the failure of the scheduled speaker to appear didn't daunt the enjoyment of the evening any. Members of the Friendly Circle class ad libbed with a short program consisting of a special duet by Patsy Menning and Patty Jo Hancock. Mary Nell Northup led in group singing with open music provided by Ouida Noel. Special awards were given to the youngest mother, Mrs. Kathy Krog; the oldest mother, Mrs. Maude Moore; the youngest daughter, Tara Durflinger; and the person traveling the farthest, Mrs. Marge Carter of Muscatine."
